Esther "Eckey" Mae (Ewoldt) Conover, age 84, a lifelong resident of Holstein, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2010 while surrounded by family at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 01, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. at the United Methodist Church of Holstein with Rev. Jerry Miller officiating. Burial will be at the Holstein Cemetery of Holstein. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 from 3:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein is in charge of the arrangements.

Eckey was born on May 24, 1926, the youngest daughter of William and Clara (Jatho) Ewoldt and sister to Marilyn Simonton and Elona Pontiff. She graduated from Holstein High School in 1944. Eckey played basketball and was a starting guard on Coach Russ Kraai's state tournament team.

On September 18, 1946, she was united in marriage to Claude Conover, Jr. in Sioux City, Iowa. They were devoted to each other and to raising their family.

Eckey experienced life to its fullest, always wearing a smile and sharing a funny story. She was an avid Green Bay Packer and Iowa Hawkeye fan, enjoying many games in Iowa City, tailgates and bus trips to the Minnesota/Iowa football games. She was a member of the Holstein United Methodist Church. Eckey and Claude were active in the Abu Bekr Shrine in Sioux City and the NIHSA horse show circuit. Eckey enjoyed summers filled with horseshows, county fairs, and trips to the lakes as she took part in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren's lives.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Claude; her parents; sister, Marilyn Simonton; and grandson, Matthew K. Conover.

Eckey is survived by her seven children, Peggy (Steve) Bauer of Danbury, Iowa, Keith (Cathy) Conover of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Deb (Ken) Hogrefe of Kingsley, Iowa, Kent (Kathy) Conover of Kingsley, Iowa, Kurt (Cheryl) Conover of Tempe, Arizona, Kelly (Traci) Conover of Anthon, Iowa, and Korey (Jodi) Conover of Holstein, Iowa; her eight grandchildren, Scott and Brent Bauer, Andrea Widen, Pat and Eric Hogrefe, Casey Conover, and Drew and Cody Conover; her eight great-grandchildren; sister, Elona Pontiff of Denver, Colorado; and a host of other family members and friends who will miss her greatly.

A special thank you for the care and visits Eckey received over the past four years from family, friends and staff while residing at the Holstein Good Samaritan Society. Also a special thanks to the great care she received from the doctors, staff and hospice of Cherokee Regional Medical Center. Eckey's good friends, Rita and Mike O'Neill, Kitty Lingle, her card club girls, and others filled her final years with joy.

Conover died on 31-Mar-2009 at Cape May County, New Jersey, at age 86. Arthur was buried at Green Creek Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Green Creek, Cape May County, New Jersey.

He was a lifetime resident here.

He was the owner of the Clinton C. Conover Farms having farmed all his life. He raised turkeys and had grown beans for the Seabrook Farms.

He was a 1941 graduate of Middle Township High School where he played football and ran track having run in the Penn Relays.

He served in the US Navy on the battleship USS New Jersey as a Gunner Second Class on sixteen inch guns on the third turret for the duration of WWII.

He was well versed on the history of the USS New Jersey and was a guest of former Governor Christie Whitman when the ship was brought to Camden, NJ.

After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Green Creek where he farmed and also played football for the Hornets, a football team in Middle Township.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #44 and the Villas Post #5343 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Art was loyal to his dogs, Kelly and Dakota, often taking them out for their ride.

In the "Biographical Encyclopedia of the Juniata Valley" by Runk (1897), William L Couch's second wife is given as Mary E Miller," daughter of Thomas Kronauer and Sallie (Etchberger) Miller, Germans by descent but Americans by birth". Crownover is an anglicized version of Van Kouwenhven/Covenhoven--a Dutch, not German name. It was originally believed that Mary E Crownover's mother was the "Sarah Covenhoven" named in the will of William Apgar of Hare's Valley, formerly from Hunterdon county, New Jersey. That Sarah remained in New Jersey, the wife of Charles Conover. Conover is another anglicized version of Covenhoven.

Hansine Elizabeth (Lund) Slack, 97, of Overland Park, Kan., died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Indian Meadows Nursing Home in Overland Park.

Services were held Saturday at Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Terry Palmer officiating.

Mrs. Slack was born Nov. 11, 1903, to Mads and Elizabeth Lund in London. In 1911 she moved with her family to Minden where she graduated from high school in 1923. She then worked for Warp Publishing Co. in Minden for a short time. She also was one of the first telephone operators in Minden. During World War II, she worked at a plant that manufactured war planes in San Diego. She married J.H. "Bun" Slack. They operated Slack's Electric Service in Minden for several years. Her husband preceded her in death. In 1996 she moved to Overland Park.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Survivors are one son, Robert Wright of Overland Park; one brother, Peter of Broadwater; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.

      Bertha A. Slack was born circa 1906 at Kearney County, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Johnson Decker Slack and Bertha Ramick.

      Zatha M. Slack was born on 17-Sep-1909 at Kearney County, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Johnson Decker Slack and Bertha Ramick. Zatha married Edward W. Johannesen. Zatha M. Slack died on 3-Jun-2001 at Amarillo, Potter County, Texas, at age 91. Zatha was buried at Minden Cemetery, Minden, Kearney County, Nebraska.

      Lee Wayne Slack was born on 2-Mar-1911 at Kearney County, Nebraska. He was the son of Johnson Decker Slack and Bertha Ramick. Lee married Neva Jeannette Haws on 1-Feb-1936. Lee Wayne Slack died in Jul-1977 at Denver, Denver County, Colorado, at age 66.

      Reese N. Slack was born on 4-Apr-1913 at Minden, Kearney County, Nebraska. He was the son of Johnson Decker Slack and Bertha Ramick. Reese N. Slack died on 29-Jul-2003 at Minden, Kearney County, Nebraska, at age 90. Reese was buried at Minden Cemetery, Minden, Kearney County, Nebraska.

     Merlin married Hansine E. Lund, daughter of Mads Lund and Elizabeth (Unknown).

      Robert Lee Wright was born on 16-Oct-1924 at Minden, Kearney County, Nebraska. He was the son of Merlin Wright and Hansine E. Lund. Robert Lee Wright died on 25-Mar-2010 at Lenexa, Johnson County, Kansas, at age 85.
     

Robert Lee Wright, 85, of Lakeview Village in Lenexa, Kansas, passed away peacefully from Lymphoma cancer on March 25, 2010. Born Oct 16, 1924 in Minden, Nebraska to Merlin and Hansine (Lund) Wright.

He attended the Minden school system until 1940 when he moved to Lexington, Nebraska. After graduating from Lexington High School in 1942 he attended the University of Nebraska until May 1943 when he was inducted into the Army.

He served his country during WWII with the Army 66th Panther Division. After sometime in Quartermaster Corp he attended the University of Wyoming from August 1943 to February 1944 in the Army Specialized Training Program. When the program was discontinued he was moved to the 66th Infantry Division in Alabama where he became a truck driver in the Anti-tank Platoon, Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 263 Regiment. The 66 Division served time in northwest France until VE Day then moved to Marseille for 6 months. In November 1945 he joined the 42nd Rainbow Division in Austria for occupation duty. Part of the time he attended the Division’s Rainbow University in Zell-Am-Zee, Austria.

In April 1946 after discharge from the Army, he started working for his step-father, J.H. (Bun) Slack and his mother at Slack’s Electric Service in Minden, Nebraska. He worked here in the summers and attended the University of Nebraska during the school years.

Robert graduated from the University of Nebraska, June 1949 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.

On June 12, 1949 he married Arlene M. Petersen in Minden, Nebraska. Moved to Kansas City, Missouri and started July 1, 1949 at Kansas City Power & Light Co, where he retired in 1988 after 39 years.
He volunteered 8 years with Habitat for Humanity in Kansas City, Kansas starting in 1998. He got his Master Electrician License so he could do the electrical wiring in these houses.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Prairie Village, Kansas since 1954.

Robert & Arlene celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in June 2009.

Our family enjoyed many camping trips. Many great memories will be cherished forever and he will be greatly missed.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents J.H. and Hansine Slack of Minden, Nebraska.

Survivors include his wife Arlene, daughter Patricia & Roy Bilyk of Overland Park, Kansas, son William & Santhanee of Pueblo West, Colorado, and 2 grandsons Christopher & Matthew Bilyk. Half brother Ross & Carol Wright of Minden, Nebraska. Also many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and Friends.

Funeral services will be at D.W Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf in Overland Park, Kansas on Saturday April 3, 2010. Visitation at 1 pm and Service at 2 pm. Interment immediately following in Johnson County Memorial Gardens Indoor Mausoleum. Fond memories and condolences for the family may be left at www.johnsoncountychapel.com.       Steven John Slack was born on 26-Jul-1942 at Minden, Kearney County, Nebraska. He was the son of Lee Wayne Slack and Neva Jeannette Haws. Steven John Slack died on 16-Nov-2009 at Sedalia, Douglas County, Colorado, at age 67.
