 Generation No. 1

1.  JOSEPH HOWELL1 JR.  (JOSEPHA HOWELL, JOHN JR.B, JOHNC) was born 1733 in Edgecombe Co NC, and died 1835 in Decalb GA (Now Campbell Co.).  He married MARGARET ELEANOR GARMON 1758.  She was born Unknown, and died Aft. 1795.

 Notes for JOSEPH HOWELL JR.:

Joseph was not quite 18 years old at the time of his father's death, but was appointed with his mother as executor of his father's will.  Joseph Howell was named on a committee to examine and allow public claims in March or April 1753.  On April 13, 1762, he was chosen to represent Edgecombe Co. in the assembly and again in 1764, and for the last time in 1765.  He apparently moved out of the county about 1765 as he did not represent the county again.  An act for establishing a town on the land of Joseph Howell on Tar River was passed and  150 acres of land was purchased by the government.  "Capt. Joseph Howell retained only a graveyard plot, when he passed the title to the trustees named on the deed."  A second act was passed to encourage Joseph to build a bridge over the river at or near the place called Howell's Ferry at Tarborough in Edgecombe Co. and he was given authority to collect tolls on men, horses, carriages and cattle passing over it.   In the rooms of the NC Historical Commission at Raliegh are the original minutes of the commission appointed to lay out the town of Tarboro.  Joseph Howell's name appears many times in those minutes until 1764, but after then it disappears.  It apprear evident that he removed westward with the general trend of migration to Mecklenburgh Co. in 1765-66,  Mecklenbureg Co. was taken from Anson Co and in turn became Cabarrus Co.

Among the signers of "the petition of Inhabitants of Anson Co, being part of the Remonstrance of the men of the assembly"

Joseph Howell, Jr., who was 43 years old when Independence was declared, saw active duty during the Revolution in the militia of Mcklenburgh County, NC as a foot soldier in Capt. Adam Alexander's Co., having enlisted June 6, 1766 and fought in the battle of Gilford Court House and Kings Mountain.   This service is recorded in "NC Historical Commission Book C".  He also furnished supplies and money to the Continental Army.

After Talitha and her family fled from Sherman's Army, she went to Jacksonville FL and took a "Midwife" course.   She would travel on horseback to practice with her little black bag all around Madison Co. in Florida.  Cina Moody Carter remembers her.
