Most brick walls can be demolished using

Do read standard text books eg Herber "Ancestral Trails" and Cole & Titford's "Tracing Your Family History". if you are one of the many I meet "flying by the seat of your pants" and think you can just "play it by ear" and "make it up as you go along" then - good luck because you will need it. Try and find a local Family History Course.

There is a set proceedure for finding your family history, ignore this and you will be going round in circles making no progress. These standard texts [above] are written in a specific sequence: Own family papers, Births Marriuages and Deaths, Census returns, Wills, Parish Registers etc. There is a reason for this sequence as the most useful genealogical records are dealt with first.

Electoral Registers tell you very little.

Join your local Family History society and regularly attend it meetings.

Remember there is no "easy solutions" if there was instant genealogy we would have all the "thrill of the chase" taken out of it.

Do not rely on the internet it is only a tool and not a solution! Always test genealogies published on the internet they are often incorrect and may have little substance to them being often compiled purely from other Internet resources. There are exceptions of course but even the best pedigrees are only interpretations of the information that the compilers have access to. We all make mistakes and assumptions which are later disproved.

Wills

Work forwards in time to find deaths, burials, wills, memorial inscriptions etc. in order to work backwards in time again.

Don't become blinkered to one ancester, if they cause you problems, then trace their brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles as they have the same ancestors [you hope!]. Leave the ancestor alone for a while and search another line. You will be surprised that you may well learn something from the other line you can apply to your troublesome ancestor.

Remember people lied, especially if they were a Convict treat what they say with a pinch of salt.

Check to the original source of the record in each and every case, as transcription errors take place, check banns registers, marriage licence papers, poorlaw papers and the records of siblings as these often add extra details. Errors occur between the GRO certificates and the original entries held locally or in Parish Registers for marriages. Try and get as close to the original source for the information as you can. A microfilm copy or photocopy is fine you don't actually "have" to see the original. Yes some records are unreadable! Try and get experienced help to try and get them read. There are still some that really are unreadable in which case look for alternative copies if there are any eg BTs.

Do use internet resources eg FamilySearch, Free BMD, Access to Archives etc. but do check the original source in each case bearing in mind that all indexes are incomplete and have errors.

Do not insist on your surname always being spelt the same way - It never was - Be imaginative take into account dialect, transcription errors and bad hearing.

DO NOT MAKE ASSUMPTIONS usually they are wrong and that is why you have your brick wall. Ask yourself what assumptions you have made? and what happens if they don't apply? For example on a marriage certificate the father of the bride and groom may be decesed but this did NOT have to be stated on the marriage certificate, do not therefore assume that the father's of bride and groom are still living when they may well be dead.

People don't always get married and then have a child but could manage it the other way round!

Manorial Records, Court Records, Church Court records, Chancery Proceedings. As these are vast untapped mostly unindexed resources.
