"RUNDELL / RUNDLE"

PAYNTER of St. Issey

Our earliest PAYNTER ancestor was William de Camborne. He killed William Paynter in a duel. He then took the name William Camborne Alias Paynter. He also took William Paynters wife!!

He was a wealthy man and was granted a Coat of Arms on 22nd July 1569. He lived at Deverill, Gwinear in South Cornwall.

A descendent of William Camboure PAYNTER settled at St. Issey near Padstow.

His name was...

1. Francis PAYNTER and Grace VIVIAN

According to "Burkes Landed Gentry", He was baptised in 1685. He was married (to Grace VIVIAN) at Gwennap in South Cornwall. In about 1721-3, he moved to St. Issey to work as a mine Captain at a Copper mine. They had 4 sons and 2 daughters. He was buried on 12 May1750 at St. Issey, but no headstone can be found.

The traditional home of the PAYNTERs at St. Issey, was the Manor House which is right next to the church. It can be easily viewed from the road.

2. William PAYNTER and Elizabeth GLANDFIELD

William PAYNTER was baptised 16 January 1726. I know very little about William except that he married a Widow called Elizabeth HAWKEY (nee GLANDFIELD). Her first husband was called Anthony HAWKEY who farmed at Nancoleth Barton near Newlyn East. The farm house at Nancoleth where she lived with her first husband is still standing, but is at the end of long lane.

William & Elizabeth were married in 1756 at St. Issey Church. They had 8 children. Elizabeth died in 1798 aged 70 years, William died 3 years later aged 75. There is a fine marble memorial to William & Elizabeth in the Church at St. Issey, erected by their son Samuel PAYNTER in 1813.

3. Johnson PAYNTER and Catherine HENDER

Johnson PAYNTER was born at St. Issey in 1765. He married Catherine HENDER at St. Issey in 1787. In about 1810 or 1811, they moved to St. Eval to live at the farm known as Little Trevisker, The Farmhouse is no longer standing. According to his will, Johnson died 18 October 1841. I have a photocopy of one page of the Will which has on it the signature of Catherine (HENDER) RUNDELL

There are sereval PAYNTERS buried at St. Eval but I haven't found a headstone for Johnson or Catherine.

4. Betsy PAYNTER and James RUNDELL

Elizabeth (Betsy) PAYNTER was christened in May 1790 at Egloshayle. (Elizabeth's Mother, Catherine HENDER was also christened at Egloshayle) Betsy married "the boy next door", James RUNDELL whose parents lived at the farm called Great Trevisker. The farmhouse at Great Trevisker is still standing. It is a private house but can be viewed from the road. They moved to the village of Penrose to work with James parents, Richard RUNDELL & Elizabeth TRUSCOTT. Later they moved to Little Petherick to a farm called Roscullion (also known as Trescullion) which they leased for 40 years.

(The Farmhouse at Roscullion is still standing and can be viewed from the roadside.) Betsy & James had 14 children. 11 children migrated to America. After the death of James in 1839, Elizabeth also migrated to America with 2 of her sons & 2 of her daughters. She went to live at Platteville where 7 of her other children had already settled

Betsy lived at Mitchell Hollow near Platteville in a cottage (East House) near her daughter Eliazabeth RUNDELL (who was then married to George PAUL).

Later she moved to north of Rewey, Wisconsin to live near her son Johnson RUNDELL. Eventually she moved back to live at Mitchell Hollow, where she died in 1877 aged 86.

James RUNDELL's headstone is in St. Eval churchyard. Betsy's Headstone is in Greenwood cemetery, Platteville, Wisconsin.
