Gunhild has the following entry in the danish Dictionary of Biography: "died 1060 at the earliest. Parents: Svend Jarl Haakonsen (died 1016) and Holmfrid Olofsdatter. Married king Svend Estridsen.
G's father, the Norwegian Svend Jarl Haakonsen, fled to Sweden because of Olav the Dire and sought refuge with his wife's father king Olof Sktkonung. G. therefore grew up in her mother's country, presumably on the wide-ranging estates in Vstergtland which belonged to her mother's family. It was also there that she first met Svend Estridsen who in his youth resided with her half-brother, king Anund Jakob. We do not know when G. married Svend. Due to the close family relationship between Svend and Gunhild (her maternal grandfather was a half-brother of Svend's mother) the marriage received great opposition from archbishop Adalbert of Bremen who demanded the marriage be dissolved. At first Svend objected but eventually he conceded partly for political reasons and partly for the intervention of Pope Leo IX. The divorce would have taken effect shortly after 1050. Thereafter G. lived on her Swedish estates... She received about 1060 emissaries from Bremen led by the deacon Adalward the Elder. Her life is otherwise unknown."
