WILLIAM WHIPPLE
No. 2

William Whipple, son of Joseph and Mary (Virgil, Smith) Whipple, served as a drummer during the War of 1812 in the 20th Connecticut Militia in the 4th Company of Infantry, commanded by Captain Paul Harvey.  Army records for June, 1813 and August, 1814, the only records available, show that William was paid $9 per month. Marks Whipple, younger brother of William, stated that William "died young near Buffalo in service in the War of 1812."

ABIJAH WHIPPLE
No. 3

Abijah Whipple, son of Joseph and Mary (Virgil, Smith) Whipple, was born about 1799, probably in Berkshire County, Massachusetts.  His name appears with the name of his father Joseph on a promissory note of 12 March 1820 to supply charcoal to Keep's Forge in Lee, Massachusetts.  On 17 March 1823 Abijah mortgaged ten acres of land in Tyringham and sometime after this moved to Vernon, Trumbull County, Ohio, probably with other members of his family.

On 18 May 1829 at Trumbull County, Ohio, Abijah Whipple married Maria Buttrick, who was born about 1811.  Maria probably was the daughter of the Joseph Buttrick, age 70, listed in the 1850 Trumbull County census.  She was the sister of Joseph Buttrick, husband of Sarah Whipple, and she was the sister of Laura Buttrick, wife of Samuel Whipple.  Abijah and his family lived in Vernon in 1830 where they are listed in the census as one man between 20 and 30, one man between 30 and 40, and one woman between 14 and 20.  The additional man is probably Abijah's brother Samuel, for they are listed as co-owners of 165 acres of land in Vernon in the Trumbull County tax records of 1832 and 1833.

On 12 March 1833 Abijah and Maria sold five acres of land at Vernon.  Their son Virgil was born in Ohio about 1835, and Abijah is listed as taxpayer and owner of 125 acres of land at Vernon worth $278 on the 1835-1837 tax records for Trumbull County.  Amanda, daughter of Abijah, was born about 1838 in Indiana.  The 1840 census of Dearborn County, Indiana, lists Abijah and his family at Miller Township, adjacent to the family of Samuel Whipple.  The occupation of both men is listed as manufacturing and trade.

Abijah's daughter Sarah was born about 1843 in Iowa, probably at Trenton, Henry County, which is where the family is found on the 1850 census.  Marks Whipple, younger brother of Abijah, believed that Abijah's family lived at Rome, Henry County, Iowa, in 1853.  Abijah is listed at Trenton Township in the 1854 Iowa special census with four males and four females, but he is not listed in the 1856 Iowa state census.

No probate record has been found in Henry County for Abijah.  Mrs. Maria Whipple married John Weller on 24 December 1858 in Henry County, therefore, we may assume Abijah died between 1854 and 1858.

SAMUEL WHIPPLE
No. 5

Samuel Whipple, son of Joseph and Mary (Virgil, Smith) Whipple, was born about 1807, probably in Berkshire County, Massachusetts.  During the 1820s, Samuel, his brothers, and his father worked as laborers for neighboring farmers in the Tyringham area.  Samuel was probably involved with his father and brothers in the manufacture of charcoal.

Samuel moved to Vernon, Trumbull County, Ohio, perhaps with his brother Abijah, for there is an additional man listed with Abijah's family in the 1830 census of Trumbull County.  In 1833, Samuel was witness to a deed for his brother Abijah in Trumbull County, and also is listed as part-owner of 165 acres of land in Vernon in the 1832 and 1833 tax records for Trumbull County.  Samuel is again listed in the 1835-1837 tax records as owner of 100 acres of land in Vernon worth $223.

About 1833, Samuel married Laura Buttrick, probably in Trumbull County, Ohio. Laura Buttrick was born about 1816 and is likely the daughter of the Joseph Buttrick, age 70, listed in the 1850 census for Trumbull County.  She was the sister of Joseph Buttrick, who married Sarah Whipple; she was also the sister of Maria Buttrick, who married Abijah Whipple.

In 1840, Samuel and his wife, with two boys under five years old, one girl under five years old, and one girl 5-10 years old, lived in Miller Township, Dearborn County, Indiana, adjacent to Abijah and his family.  Both men's occupation is listed as manufacturing and trade.  Samuel's brother Marks wrote in 1853 that Samuel's family lived in Missouri.  The 1850 Holt County, Missouri, census lists a William Whipple with wife Laura and family, two houses away from Joseph and Sarah (Whipple) Buttrick in District 38.  This "William" is most likely Samuel, son of Joseph Whipple.

According to the 1850 census, four of Samuel's children were born in Missouri. Undoubtedly, there were others born between 1850 and 1860.  Samuel and others of the Whipple family, however, have not been found in any 1860 census.1 October 1859 Laura (Buttrick) Whipple died in childbirth.  Three locations of her death are given at various places in Samuel's pension papers: Forest City and Johnson's Mill, both in Holt County, and Iowa Point, Doniphan County, Kansas.  29 October 1860 Samuel Whipple married Mrs. Ruth Hasty, widow of William Hasty.  The marriage took place at the home of Samuel's nephew Virgil Buttrick and his wife Hannah Buttrick at Forest City, Holt County.

Samuel enlisted as a private in the Union Army 26 October 1861.  He joined the same unit as his son Samuel J. Whipple and his nephews Harlow, Virgil, and Daniel Whipple.  The muster roll for Company E, 25th Missouri Volunteers, describes Samuel as 54 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, grey eyes, dark complexion, and a Wagoner.  Samuel was mustered in December 1861, stood guard duty in bad weather and caught a cold which turned into bronchitis.  He was admitted to the Army hospital at St. Joseph, Missouri, in February 1862 and died there 21 March 1862.  The pension papers of Samuel's son, Samuel J. Whipple, indicate that another son of Samuel may have died of measles at the same hospital during the Civil War.

A probate inventory for Samuel Whipple in Holt County on 30 April 1862 indicated a value of $59 in livestock, including a red ox team, two cows with calves, one heifer, and two head of sheep, no money, no books, and several notes of debt dated September 1861.  In 1863, Ruth Hasty Whipple married James Hale.  In 1873 she married A. D. Brooks, and in 1890 she married Ephriam. Wells.  Ruth died 1 May 1896 at Clay County, Nebraska.

PAMELIA WHIPPLE LAWRENCE

No. 8

Pamelia Whipple, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Virgil, Smith) Whipple, was born about 1803, probably at Berkshire County, Massachusetts.  About 1825 Pamelia, called Melia, married Sylvester Lawrence, son of Joseph and Charity Lawrence.  Sylvester Lawrence was born 5 July 1810 at Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York.

Sylvester Lawrence is listed in the 1830 Berkshire County, Massachusetts, census with his wife and two children--one boy and one girl, both under five.  He is listed as a neighbor to Marks and Armenia (Lawrence) Whipple in Sheffield Township.  Pamelia (Whipple) Lawrence died in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, about 1833.  Sylvester Lawrence died 10 June 1886 at Lee, Massachusetts.

SARAH WHIPPLE BUTTRICK
No. 9

Sarah Whipple, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Virgil, Smith) Whipple, was born about 1804, probably in Berkshire County, Massachusetts.  About 1823, Sarah married Joseph Buttrick, who was born about 1799 in Connecticut.  Joseph was probably the son of the Joseph Buttrick, age 70, listed in the 1850 census at Trumbull County, Ohio.  Sarah's husband Joseph was the brother of Maria Buttrick, wife of Abijah Whipple, and of Laura Buttrick, wife of Samuel Whipple.  Two Joseph Buttricks are listed at various times in the Trumbull County tax records for the period 1826-1836.

Joseph and his family are most likely the Buttricks listed at Vernon in the 1830 census of Trumbull County, Ohio.  When their son Charles was born about 1837, the Buttricks were living in Indiana or Iowa.  Missouri, probably Holt County, was their residence about 1847 when their son Samuel was born.  In Holt County, Missouri, they lived at District 38 in 1850, at Lewis Township in 1860, and at Benton Township in 1870, 1876, and 1880.

Property values on the later census schedules indicate that Joseph Buttrick was a successful farmer.  Both Sarah and Joseph are listed in ill health in the 1880 census, living with their son Samuel.  According to a family record Joseph died 1 February 1883, age 87 years, and Sarah died 27 January 1885, age 80 years, 6 months.  There is no cemetery record of their burial in Holt County, Missouri.

MARKS WHIPPLE
No. 10

Marks Whipple, youngest son of Joseph and Mary (Virgil, Smith) Whipple, was born about 1805 at Sandisfield, Massachusetts.  He was probably involved with his brothers and father in the manufacture of charcoal, and he probably hired out as a laborer to the neighboring farmers in Tyringham, as did his father and brothers.

On 13 March 1828, Marks Whipple married Armenia Lawrence, born about 1810-1815, the daughter of Joseph and Charity Lawrence of Sheffield, Massachusetts.  In 1830, Marks and his family lived at Sheffield as neighbors to Sylvester and Pamelia (Whipple) Lawrence, brother and sister of Armenia and Marks, respectively.  About 1833, Marks moved his family and his parents to Vernon, Trumbull County, Ohio.  They all moved to nearby Johnston about 1836.  The 1840 Trumbull County census does not list any women the age of Armenia in the Whipple household; we may assume Armenia died before 1840.  In the 1850 Trumbull County census Marks is listed with only Harlow and William at Johnston Township.

29 December 1852 Marks Whipple married Eliza Lattin.  They moved to Holt County, Missouri, about 1856, where according to family information Eliza died about 1861. Marks and John Nelson Whipple, their young son, lived with Sarah (Whipple) Willyard.  Marks lived with his oldest son Henry in Holt County in 1876, and with his youngest son John Nelson Whipple in 1880.  Marks died 20 September 1880 at Holt County, Missouri, and is buried in the New Liberty Baptist Cemetery.
