Westmoreland Revolutionary Burials

While researching other counties, I discovered several record for Revolutionary veterans buried in the town of Westmoreland, Oneida county, New York. As I grew up there, they caught my eye and I started a record of them. The following table sprang from that list. It should not be considered complete or definative.

Ephraim Blackmore is shown as being born in Oblong, NY. This is an unincorporated section of New York along the Connecticut's western border. In the late 1600's Connecticut's panhandle, the area along Long Island Sound in the southwest corner of the state containing Greenwich and Stamford, was the center of a territorial dispute between New York and Connecticut. It was resolved in 1683 by New York giving up it's claim to the area. In return, New York received undisputed claim to Rye, NY and a strip of land along the western border of Connecticut equal in area to the panhandle. This consisted of a 1.81 mile wide strip running from Ridgefield to the Massachusetts border, called the Oblong.

SAR# is the patriot number assigned by the SAR, DAR# is the number assigned by the DAR and FAG# is the memorial number on findagrave.com. The burials with a memorial on Findagrave have been collected into a virtual cemetery, that may contain more information and photos.
