Historically, in England, there are four areas where concentrations of the surnames occur. These appear distinct for two reasons.

A List of Canterbury Parishes can be found here & I hope to add a map of their proximity later.

Freemen of the City of Canterbury covering the period 1550 to 1835 are being listed.

The earliest records have been taken from the LDS IGI and can be seen in the table below.

In addition to these English locations, family name connections can be found in Canada, the USA and Australia. Many of these are being followed up.

According to www.192.com, currently listed on the United Kingdom Registers of Electors:

CRIPPEN - 53

CRIPPIN - 48

The following has been produced from http://www.taliesin-arlein.net/names/ the content of which was kindly provided by the Office of National Statistics, holds a count of the number of people in England, Wales and the Isle of Man with a given surname, based on the names of people registered with the NHS. The extract was prepared on 9th September 2002 and contains 269,353 surnames, representing 54,412,638 people. Names with less than 5 instances are excluded, and we believe that (as the total exceeds the population) a proportion of deceased people or duplicates may be included. However, despite this, this list will give a good idea of how common (or rare) a given surname is.
