CENSUSwebpage
This lists Cruits (all spellings) I found in U.S. census records through 1870.  I searched only a few 1880 & 1900 indexes.  I also added notes from other sources.

NOTE: The 1890 U.S. census was destroyed by fire.

ALABAMA

1850, Sept. ALA  Baldwin Co., Division 1, p. 87b line 8
Cruit, G. M.          31      no occupation given
Louisa                  28

A mark on the census page says G. M. was married within the year.  But the census taker put those marks by so many names that it seems that 25% of the population was married within the year.  So these marriage marks are inaccurate.

RICHARD CRUIT'S SUMMARY:

Richard Cruet, an orphan age 15 last Sept 15, with consent of his brother Robert, is apprenticed until 21 to Wm. Quinn of Georgetown, trade of white & blacksmith.  1/29/1824.  Age right to be Richard c 10/10/1808, Paignton, Devon by Gilbert Distin Cruit and Eadith Heath Cruit.  That Richard was Alabama's Gilbert M. Cruit's uncle.  Richard d. 1886, career at livery stable.  1840 he has wife and son < 5.  1847 Declaration of Intention to become citizen says he was about 39 years old, emigrated from Liverpool, arrived at New York 4th May 1844 and intends to reside at Wash. D.C.  (His age is right in this document, but it doesn't make sense unless he left U.S. for a while, then moved back, or the year of arrival is wrong.  I have copy of original document.) April 1, 1851, Richard Cruit listed, in D.C. index to naturalizations. April 1, 1837 or 1851, original record hard to read, Richard Cruit issued passport. July 31, 1851 a Richard Cruit arrived N.Y. on ship named Washington. He was 43 1/2, b. about 1808, occupation Gentleman, nationality American, Ship departed Breman, Germany & Southampton, England. Wife Lydia d. 3/21/1854. Richard m Mary Ann Cragear, 24 Jan 1855, she d. 1889.

From: U.S. passport applications 1795-1925: April 1, 1867, Richard Cruit b. England on or about 15 Sep, 1808. Printed wording says he is naturalized citizen of U.S. and about to travel. Age 58, 5' 4".

Richard's will written 3/21/1879, after Richard Jr. had died, left all to wife Mary Ann, and if she is dead, to his grandchildren.  Will filed Dec 3, 1886, after his death. Index to D. C. Wills: Richard Cruit, 1886, Box 96.

From Oak Hill Cemetery records: RICHARD CRUIT, Sr. / died / Nov. 2, 1886 / aged 78 years. / MARY CRUIT / died / May 1, 1889
/ aged 85 years.

From about 1856 through about 1862, Richard was administrator of the estate of James Coyle & guardian to the Coyle children: Mary Anna, Hugh, Thomas, & Elizabeth. James Coyle m Susan Turner 12/14/39 & both were from Ireland. Coyle still married to Susan in 1850 census. Seems that Coyle was just a friend or business associate.

ROBERT CRUIT'S SUMMARY:

1819, June 15.  Robert Cruit arrived Philadelphia.  Born abt 1795.  Nativity Devonshire.  Emigrated from Plymouth.
1824, June 3. Robert Cruit  Declaration of Intention verifies his 6/15/19 arrival date at PHL and nativity Devonshire and gives age 29.  Same Robert that also arrived 3 years later (1822) at Norfolk and is 3 years older than at PHL? and same Robert that m Catherine Widdicombe 6/15/1822 in Paignton?  1835, May 27,  Robert Cruit naturalized.  Witnesses Thomas Woodward and Randolph Spalding.
Robert Cruit age 27 (d. 11/22/1861 DC) & Catherine age 25 (b. Eng, d. 5/12/1876) arrive 1822 Norfolk with 1 child.  Bought nearby Cruit farm in Virginia 1825.  Cruit Farmhouse: 1614 N. Highland Street.  Seems to be Arlington, VA.  From the Arlington, VA local history site: http://www.co.arlington.va.us/lib/history/pichiste.htm.  "Robert Cruit of Washington bought a farm in the Clarendon area in 1825 and built this house as a summer home for his family. He reportedly was the first person to import Jersey cows to the United States, and his farm maintained a fine herd of Jersey cows throughout four generations of the Cruit family. The house served as a hospital during the Civil War. Builder Frank Lyon purchased the Cruit farm in 1923 when he developed the Lyon Village subdivision." A Lyon Village historian says Robert was a Washington butter merchant and this was a dairy farm and was used as a civil war hospital after Robert died. Frank Lyon bought 163 acres from Robert's heirs.

Someone online reported seeing this for sale on ebay: an original pass through union lines that read:  "Headquarters Army of the Potomac, Washington, Nov. 7th, 1861.  Pass Robert and Richard Cruit to their farm near Fort Corcoran. Good for one week from date. By Command of Major General McLellan".  Robert died 2 weeks later.

Robert in 1830 DC census with wife, 1 dau 15-20, 2 other kids.  He & wife b. eng., and eldest child also. Robert in 1830 and 1834 city directory as butter merchant. 1840 Robert has 1 dau 15-20, 3 other younger.  Older dau from 1830 not there. I believe that their oldest daughter died.

Robert's will written Sept 1, 1858. Will filed Dec 7, 1861 after his death on Nov 22, 1861. Newspaper said age 68 at death. Left $100 each to nephews Edwin Cruit, son of George, and Henry, son of John L. Cruit.  (Edwin m 1859 & John L. Cruit d. 1841). Other heirs wife Catherine, daughters Susan Cruit, Catherine E. the wife of Samuel Owens, Ann Cruit, Louisa Cruit. Only Catherine E. seems to be married when will written.

Robert's will contested in court 1906 by daughter Ann. The court wrote:
"The testator left surviving him a wife and four daughters,—Catherine E., then the wife of Samuel Owen, Susan, Ann (appellant), and Louisa. The widow of the deceased died May 13, 1876; Louisa died January 2, 1876, Susan died December 31, 1900, and Catherine E. Owen died May 14, 1901. Susan and Louisa never married, nor has Ann up to the present time... The property produces an income of $11,000 or $12,000.

Catherine E. Cruitt b. Aug 26 1824 d. May 14 1901 was a Cruitt of wealthy Baltimore stock who owned considerable Washington real estate.  There were about 10 Cruitt children.  She m Samuel Wilson Owen, the youngest man at the Alamo, who was sent for help and thus survived.  He later became a colonel.  He may have married more than once.  The preceeding is from the John Hattersly Family Tree.  A Catherine E. Cruitt & Evan Evans got marriage license in DC 2/20/1847

7-31-1904 newspaper article about a murder/suicide on the farm by a worker listed a Thomas Widdecombe as manager of the Cruit estate.  Robert's wife's maiden name was Widdicombe, so this was probably a relative of hers.

MARYLAND

1756, Jun 1.  Robert Cruett found a horse on his land.  From: Baltimore County, Maryland Deed Records.  Many notices of horses found by people.  Why those notices would be in this book didn't make sense.

I saw a photocopy of the original of these 1776 records, and the Cruit name is VERY distinct.

His father William came from Cornwall in early 1800s.  John William Cruett's mother was Martha Cunningham, b 1799 in MD. William and John W. show up several times in Baltimore records listed here.

WILLETS' in NEW YORK CENSUS
(Gilbert M. Cruit Sr.'s sister Mary Jane Willets)

Mary Jane Willets age 15 arrived from England in New York in 1840.  But that is a falese lead because she was with an entire Willets family that did not include Amos.  It appeared that her mother Willets was the primary immigrant.

I looked through the New York City marriage records on Ancestry.com and found nothing for Amos Willets or Mary Jane Cruit using various spellings.  New York kept pretty good records, so either some of the records could have been destroyed or they got married somewhere else.

1850 Doggett'S New York City Directory
Willets, Amos crockery.  Did not see original, just an index.  Don't know if this is Mary Jane Cruit's husband or not.

1857 New York City Directory:
Willets, Amos, crockery 276 Pearl, h Kent Ave. B'klyn
Willets, Amos, late hardware, h 240 E Broadway

Several simple tax records found for an Amos Willets during the early 1860s.  No other info except an address on Fulton. Looks like he was a dealer of some kind, such as a retail dealer. Don't know if he is Mary Jane's husband or not.

1869 New York City Directory:
Willets, Amos H., fish, 17 seventh av., home: 41 tenth, Brooklyn.

1870 NY Brooklyn

OHIO

1804. From the book Footprints of An Itinerant, John Crewit is listed as a member of the Methodist Church on the Scioto circuit of traveling preachers. Scioto county is adjacent to Brown County which was Adams county at this time, I think.

These first two Cruits below are in Adams County. Brown County was created partly from Adams County in 1818, so these Cruits may never have moved though they change counties farther below. The ages could be right for there to have been one original Cruit, John, and the others be his children.  I had assumed that William and Hanah Moon Cruit had moved to Ohio to be near close Cruit relatives, but they settled about 90 miles away from the Cruits in Brown Co. If William had moved near John, it would indicate the two knew each other, but in this case it doesn't tell us if they were or were not closely related.

From a History of Adams County: "James A. Cruit and William Cruit were in Co. E, 91st Regt. Ohio Vol. Inf. William Cruit wounded in battle of Cloyd's Mountain, W. Va. William died in rebel prison June 1, 1864. James A. Cruit died Nov. 11, 1864."  (But I have checked the military pension records and these two soldiers seem to show up as Crutes, not Cruits)

1821 obituary of Susanna Cruit:  Chambersburg, PA, Tuesday Aug 7. "Died, in this borough, on Tuesday last, after a few days illness, Miss Susanna Cruit. The deceased was from England and has, we understand, a father and two brothers somewhere in this country. She had resided here near a year, and for sometime past carried on the straw-bonnet and mantua making businesses, with credit to herself & satisfaction to her employers. She received in her illness all the attention and tender kindness which christian benevolence and hospitality could bestow; and her remains were respectfully interred in the Methodist burial ground, to which society she had attached herself. Printers (particularly those in the District of Columbia) are respectfully requested to notice this death, in such form as they may see proper, for the information of the friends of the deceased." She is probably the Susan below. Susan below was a dress maker and the mantua mentioned in the obit was a dress.

l820, Qtr ending Sep 30.  Brig Rising Sun arrived Philadelphia. Nationality of all is Gr. Britain and last permanent residence England.. Index listed John Curtis as Cruit, but I saw the record and it is clearly Curtis and they are written in this following order and in the same handwriting, so seems no chance that the writer would have spelled Cruit correctly for George and Susan but not John.
Gilbert Cruit, 50, farmer; (Age is within 3 years of Gilbert Distin Cruit Sr.)
John Curtis, 33, gardner
Susan Cruit 20, dressmaker.

Warrantees of Land in the County of Huntingdon, 1787-1889
Land warrants were issued to a person who wanted to obtain land
from the state.  A warrant gave the applicant permission to have the land surveyed.  When the survey was returned to the state, a patent was issued.  There can be many years between the issuing of a warrant and a patent, and it may not have been issued to the same person. A patent is the equivalent of a deed.

VIRGINIA

1724, about.  Cruit b about 1724, Northumberland, Va. About 1752 m Hannah Lamkin, Northumberland, Va. Source: LDS record submitted by individual. Another LDS record submitted by individual on same person shows born about 1730. From book Married Well and Often: Marriages of the Northern Neck of Virginia 1649-1800, "Cruite, Richard (or Cruit) and Lamkin, Hannah." The previous quotation including the parenthesis is from the book exactly.

1824. From the book An Account of General La Fayette's Visit to Virginia: Major John L. Cruit was listed in a group of Rev. War officers who would be present.  John L. Cruit's name is engraved along with other Viriginia officers of the Revolution on an obelisk on the west side of the La Fayette gate, the principal entrance to the Capitol Square in Richmond.* See note below.
1834. A Revolutionary War vet applied for a pension and in his application stated: John L. Cruit and James Morton of P. Edward [Virginia] could probably give me some information on this subject, but as both of them are very old men, it is likely nothing satisfactory could be had.* See note below.

*BUT, All other references to John L. Cruit list him as Crute.  These include his will and the census showing him in Prince Edward and a few other mentions of him in books and magazines.  So John L. really seems to be a Crute rather than a Cruit. A Watkins family genealogy listed John L. Crute's parents as Louisa and Venable Crute of  Mecklenberg, VA.
