Our British Ancestors & Their Immigration to America

This lists all Cruits in chronological order that I found in Britain, on immigration records, and on U.S. naturalization records to about 1900.  Since so many Cruits were in Devon and Cornwall, England, toward the bottom of this page I also list those Cruits in separate Devon and Cornwall sections.  BUT, I haven't updated the Devon and Cornwall sections from the main list lately, so they are not as complete as the main list.

Before whom: Roger Verly, of Norwich; Robert de Ashley, Clerk.When taken: 20/05/1345. First term: 29/09/1345. Last term: 29/09/1345. Writ to: Sheriff of Norfolk. Sent by: Roger Verly, of Norwich; Edmund Rose, Clerk. Endorsement: Norff' coram Iusticiariis.  This in British national archives.

1454, Feb 3. Ipswich Borough Archives Catalogue, 1255 - 1835. Finance and Town Property.
"c/3/10/2/3/5/55" (I don't know what that heading means).
"Lands and tenements in Claydon and Barham. Feoffment from Nicholas Rose, Matthew Passhemere and John Cruet, all of Claydon, to John Attehill, Geoffrey Attehill, Walter Bowbrook and Adam Attehill. Premises are those which feoffers lately had by grant of Walter Brenn of Claydon; names of 5 witnesses. Latin; 3 seals on tags." This was on Ancestry.com.  A tenement was a building or house divided into apartments, usually in a poorer part of town.

"c/3/10/2/3/4/94" (I don't know what that heading means).
"Messuage with adjoining alder carr and lands and tenements in Barham and Claydon.
Feoffment from Geoffrey Hyll, son and heir of John Hyll of Claydon, to John Kech of Ipswitch and Robert Hill, John Sorell and John Cruet, all of Claydon. Premises are those which descended to feoffor by inheritance on death of his father, and were formerly Matilda Jordan's; names of 3 witnesses." This was on Ancestry.com. A messuage was a house with adjoining buildings and land. An alder carr was a type of wooded area. A tenement was a building or house divided into apartments, usually in a poorer part of town.

A tenement was a building or house divided into apartments, usually in a poorer part of town.

1555.  Covenantors Humphrey Walrond, esq., and Henry Blakemoore.  Covenantes Henry Tillerd and Richard Cruyte.  Messuage and land in Newland and elsewhere in Cullompton.

1624, Feb 2.  Katherine Crewett (one source wondered if it could be Crannet) m Francis Harman at St. Andrew by the Wardrobe, London or at St. Andrew In The London, Middlesex. A few references in LDS records of a Katherine Crewett being c at that same place between 1594 & 1603 but no mention of parents.  Francis moved to America in 1635, she went with him or maybe had died?

1699, May 5.  Ann Cruett d.  Coronor's report of Chester County Pennsylvania.  Chester County was replaced by or altered by creation of Delaware County in 1789.  "We whose names are here subscribed being summoned & attested by the Coroner to view the Corpse of Ann Cruett do find by the best evidence that can find by two witness & several others big in place that nothing did procure her death but the heat of the weather."

1710. Cruite, Wilmote, Stokegabriel (letter t. indicated testament rather than a copy), county: Devonshire. (another source showed county gloucestershire, but probably Devon.) Devon, Cornwall & Gloucester Wills & Administrations proved in the consistory court of the bishop of Exeter, 1532-1800.  Devonshire wills used to be at probate registry in Exeter. This from British Record Society, Index Library, maybe vol. 35 at DAL library. Prior to 1858, wills were proved in Devon in five courts. These records were held in Exeter, where they were destroyed during WWII. Few had been abstracted beforehand, though indexes had been prepared for all except the Totnes wills.  A Willmott Croote, female, was c by father Andrew at Berry Pomeroy, Devon, Nov 11, 1639.

1790, July 26.  John Cruet, sailmaker on the British ship Illustrious made a naval will leaving all to wife Mary of parish of Poplar, county of Middlesex. This was part of London.

l790, Nov 24.  Gilbert Distin Cruit m Eadith Heath at Totnes, Devon. From LDS IGI. I have not seen the actual church record, but someone who had seen it wrote online that the record says that Gilbert was from Paignton and witnesses were John Distin and William Taylor.

1791, Jan 12.  Arthur Cruitt committed by Thomas Taylor esq Jan 10th for feloniously stealing a Quarter of Mutton. [comment - Convicted]. Devon Quarter Sessions - Epiphany 1791 ([DRO - QS32/83]. Epiphany sessions Bridewell calendar.  It appears that Arthur Cruitt was the guilty party.

Robert appears back in Paignton to m Catherine in 1822, then they also arrive  in 1822 at Norfolk with Catherine and child and Robert  is 3 years older than at PHL.

l820, Qtr ending Sep 30.  Brig Rising Sun arrived Philadelphia. Nationality of all is Gr. Britain and last permanent residence England. They all intended to become residents of U.S.  Index listed John Curtis as Cruit, but I saw the record and it is clearly Curtis and they are written in this following order and in the same handwriting, so seems no chance that the writer would have spelled Cruit correctly for George and Susan but not John. I searched LDS IGI for John Curtis from around Paignton, Devon or nearby area, none found.

Susan's age is correct for Gilbert to be her father. She appears to die a year later in Chambersburg, PA where she was working as a dressmaker. See her obit.

He reportedly was the first person to import Jersey cows to the United States, and his farm maintained a fine herd of Jersey cows throughout four generations of the Cruit family. The house served as a hospital during the Civil War. Builder Frank Lyon purchased the Cruit farm in 1923 when he developed the Lyon Village subdivision.

John L. first shows up 1830 census in D.C.  But John L. listed as admon in Thomas Cruit's Totnes will in 1828, but John L. may not have actually still been in England for the will.

1819, June 15 or 14.  Robert Cruit arrived Philadelphia on Brig Susan.  Age 24, so born about 1795.  Nativity Devonshire.  Emigrated from Plymouth.  Declaration of Intention June 3, 1824 at DC verifies his 6/15/19 arrival date at PHL and nativity Devonshire and gives age 29.  Proof of Residence and naturalized May 27, 1835 at DC.  Witnesses Thomas Woodward and Randolph Spalding. Same Robert that also arrives 3 years later (1822) at Norfolk with Catherine and is 3 years older than at PHL? and same Robert that m Catherine 1822 in Paignton?

l820, Qtr ending Sep 30.  Gilbert Cruit, 50, farmer; John Cruit, 33, farmer; Susan Cruit 20, dressmaker, arrived in Philadelphia. Index to Pass. Lists... PHL 1800-1906 on m'film at DAL has date 9/6/1820. It does not list John, and it lists nationality as Gr. Britain and last permanent residence England. They on Brig Rising Sun. Original reference said all 3 were on page 203. Age of Gilbert is within 3 years of Gilbert Distin Cruit Sr.

1835, Apr 29.  George Cruit m Sarah Wolf Deller at St. James, Paddington, London.  Had Edwin Deller Cruit 1836, Edwin in 1880 Maryland census. Census says parents born Devonshire.  George Cruit c 1812 at Paignton, Devon which was Alabama Gilbert M. Cruit's uncle.  That would have made Edwin first cousins with Gilbert, Sarah, Mary Jane & James.  And Edwin appears in D.C. & married Mary E. FOWLER who could have been Sarah A. Cruit Fowler's in-law?  Another George c 1792 by James & Ann Cruit at Broadhempston, Devon.

1836, May 1.  Edwin Deller Cruit c by George and Sarah Wolfe Cruit at St James, Paddington, London.  (Edwin shows up in 1880 Maryland census. Census says parents born Devonshire) Sarah seems to remarry 1839. George had died? See more info on them at 1835 above.
