(info last updated 7/4/04)
Some of the information on the Irish Cruites was provided by Mary Alice Cruitt of Birmingham, MI. Her information came from Bridget Cruitt and from facts learned on a trip to Ireland. The parish priest in Callan Fr Kennely (I am trying to decipher smudged writing for that location) was the son of Anne McHugh's sister, who died in childbirth. The priest still lived there as of the time of this research, but I am not sure when that was.
The family gravestones in Ireland are all spelled Cruite,
though various descendants from the Irish Cruites spell it Cruite, Cruit,
or Cruitt.
John or Patrick Cruit (b about 1815, d 1870) m Ellen Wall (b about 1825, d 1872)
*In a History of Nobles County, 1908, Michael Cruit gave the following
account of his life: Born in Queen's county Ireland in July of 1855
to John and Ellen (Wall) Cruit. John died in 1870 at age 55, Ellen
in 1872 at age 47. Michael came to the United States in the spring
of 1873, and spent his first summer working on a farm near New York City.
He then moved to Savannah, GA, where his mother's brother had settled,
and spent 1 1/2 years working on the docks. He returned to NYC, and
took a job with the Dodge Express Company, hauling freight from the docks.
In Feb. 1876 he married Mary Walsh, a native of Kilkenny. In 1880 the couple
moved to Minnesota as part of the Bishop Ireland Company, and homesteaded
in Nobles County.
Other family info about Michael says that before coming to America he
lived on the family farm in county Laois, formerly Queens, near Ballytarsna.
Thomas's sister Catherine Cruite DiGiorgi wrote me in 2004 with more
info. "My father, Charles E. Cruite, was born in Ansonia, Ct, in 1925,
the son of James T. Cruite and Rosann Riley. My grandfather, James, was
the 7th or 8th child of John C. Cruite and Ann Stebbins, born 1879,
in Derby, Ct. I found my Great-grandparents in the 1870 Federal Census
in Adams, Mass with their first 3 children. And I found my G-grandfather
again, in the 1860 Fed census in Great Barrington, Mass. I'm having a difficult
time finding any info on Ann Stebbins, that I know is of Irish birth. My
father would say she was imported to North Adams, Mass, as a domestic.
I believe the Charles Cruite in Kilkenny, is my ancestor."
