This portrait was hanging above the fireplace mantel in my grandparents' house in Collingswood, New Jersey, in the 1940s. Neither my father nor any of his siblings found out who this sitter was, nor why this portrait was hung in a prominent place in their home. It may or may not be of a Culbert ancestor. Research into possible painters has not been very informative.
