"S" CULBERTSON FAMILIES OF IRELAND

    1. Dr. Samuel D. CULBERTSON was one of seven brothers who came from Ireland and settled near Chambersburg, Pennsylvania at a place still known as Culbertson's Row.  He died in Chambersburg at age ninety, caused by exposure after the burning of his residence at the time Chambersburg was destroyed by the Confederates. hac
      1.1 Albert CULBERTSON; (b. 1822; d. 1879, Monongahela City, Pennsylvania); went to Pittsburgh as a youth and began life as a clerk in a store.  For a time he kept books for a commission firm, Poindexter and Company, and afterward engaged in the commission business on his own account.  In 1858 he went to Monongahela City and commenced the manufacture of paper, his mill being the first west of the Allegheny mountains and the second in the United States to use steam rollers.  He m. Emily BROWN; (b. Allegheny, Pennsylvania, d/o James BROWN; d. aft. 1879) when she was sixteen years old.  They had three sons and four daughters, including: hac
        1.1.3 Samuel Duncan CULBERTSON; (b. 12 Aug 1850, Allegheny, Pennsylvania).  He was educated at Monongahela City and Tuscarora Academy.  He assisted his father in the paper mill, and was a skilled maker of strawboard.  In 1882 he came to Pittsburgh and worked for the B&O Railroad, later the P&W and Pittsburgh Junction railroads, and later still was a commercial freight agent with the St. Louis and San Francisco railroad.  While a resident of Monongahela City, he served as city auditor.  In 1888 he lived in the Mansfield Valley, was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mansfield and the Masonic fraternity, and was a Republican.  In September, 1874, he m. swp Spinning Wheel Premium Entitlements List (a.k.a. Flax List).  In order to encourage the linen industry the Irish Linen Board encouraged farmers to grow flax.  Grants were paid in the form of free looms or spinning wheels in exchange for the flax.  The farmer's name, parish and number of wheels or looms were recorded on this list.
