Notes:
An Anson County record,i dated 6 February 1807, records the sale from Hugh Ross to Edmund Lilly Sr. of a tract of land “S side of Rocky River; another tract crossing Camp Branch; adj Polly Ryles, Samuel Carter; wit: Armstead Lilly Sr, Armstead Lilly Jr.” One of these (the Armstead Sr.) was probably the one listed here, while the other (Armstead Jr.) was probably the son of John.
“Armstead Lilly 50 ac; warrant #5997 issued 19 Mar 1803 by Jos Parsons to Armstead Lilly for 50 ac on Deep Br and between Colson & Edmund Lilly; 50 ac surveyed 20 Mar 1804 by [page torn]; on Rocky R; border: begins at third corner spanish oak of Edmund Lilly’s 50 ac survey, joins Legrand & Johnson; Duglas Randal & Hugh Ross, chain carriers; 18 Dec 1804 Armstead Lilly paid purchase money for 30 [sic] ac in entry #5997 (signed) J Craven, compt; grant #2043 issued 18 Nov 1805.”ii
"The 1820 NC census lists no Armistead Lilly of
any spelling variation, but the 1820 census of Montgomery County has
been lost, so it is possible that he was living there in 1820."
“Friday, Aug. 29, 1817 … Married, on Thursday, on the 7th inst., by the Rev. Armstead Lilly, MR. Wm. Lilly2, late of Fayetteville, to Miss Eliza M. Winfield, daughter of Edward Winfield, Esq. of Anson County.”iv
We have not been able to contact this person and the information is confusing. However, William H. Lilly did take out a marriage bond in Rowan County to marry Camilla C. Tores as she states, and there is not a William H. Lilly in the census. But whichever William Lilly married Eliza Winfield in 1817 (officiated by Armistead Lilly) was likely the father of the Thomas W. Lilly she describes in the lawsuit that went all the way to the NC Supreme Court – by virtue of John Winfield’s participation in the suit. So it appears that William H. Lilly might well have had a son named Thomas, but it wasn’t the same Thomas that married Drusilla and lived past 1870. Beyond that, I don’t know what to make of the information in the above link. (The Thomas W. Lilly in the lawsuit was born ca. 1824, and apparently was never listed in the census.)
We need more
information and clarification of this.

Notes:
The following proves there were two Armistead Lillys, one probably the son of Nathaniel, the other probably the son of John.
An Anson County record,v dated 6 February 1807, records the sale from Hugh Ross to Edmund Lilly Sr. of a tract of land “S side of Rocky River; another tract crossing Camp Branch; adj Polly Ryles, Samuel Carter; wit: Armstead Lilly Sr, Armstead Lilly Jr.” One of these (the Armstead Sr.) was probably the one listed here, while the other (Armstead Jr.) was probably the son of John.
The 1820 NC census lists no Armistead Lilly of any spelling
variation, but the 1820 census of Montgomery County has been lost, so
it is possible that he was living there in 1820.
A history of the Sandy Creek Baptist Associationvi
reports that “Armisted” Lilly was one of the delegates from
the
Rocky River Baptist Church that was to meet with other Association
members in 1809 and 1811. He was identified as “Elder Armistead
Lilly” in the 1814 meeting, still representing the Rocky River
Baptist Church.

I do not understand the “P” middle initial (and it appears very plainly on the 1850 census), but I am almost certain this is Edmund Jones Lilly, son of Edmund Lilly Jr. & Mary Marshall. In the 1860 census, he is correctly listed as “Edmund J. Lilly.”

1850 census:
William A. Lilly, 39
Mary Lilly, 40
David D. Lilly, 12
Sarah F. Lilly, 10
Mary A. Lilly, 8
Wm F. Lilly, 6
John C. Lilly, 3
Notes:
May, or may not, be the same W. A. Lilly listed in the 1870 census in Montgomery County (Eldorado Township), age 58, living alone, occupation “gold miner”
Could be a son of 1.1.1 Rev. Armistead Lilly, or of 1.1.2 John Lilly.
1 This name is very difficult to read. It is rendered “Benrd” in one census index. It could be “Busrd” or “Emnd”, but “Armsd” makes the most sense in context.
2 This William was probably William H. Lilly, oldest son of Edmund Lilly Jr.
3 This William was probably William H. Lilly, oldest son of Edmund Lilly Jr.
4 Assumes 7 children in household were his, and that there was 2 years between children’s births.
5 Assumes all 10 children were his, and 2 years between their births.
6 The two sons are probably James M. and David C. Lilly.
7 The original census (on microfilm) does appear to spell the name “Edwd,” but I am sure this is Edmund Lilly Jr.
8 Indexed as “Edmund V. Lilly”
9 The two sons are probably James M. and David C. Lilly. The two daughters are probably Mary & Eliza Lilly.
10 Thomas Pemberton married Frances, daughter of Edmund & Mary (Marshall) Lilly.
