This ended the military carrer of General Hartranft.
In August, 1865, he was nominated Auditor-General,
and elected in October of that year by 23,000 major-
ity; in the fall of 1868 he was again elected to the
same office by a handsome majority.
Upon the expiration of the second term of Governor
Geary's administration, General Hartranft was placed
in nomination for Governor of Pennsylvania by the
Republican party, and after one of the most bitter
bitter political contests known in the history of this State,
General Hartrafnt was elected by a triumphant maj-
ority of 35,000. On the 26th of May, 1875, Gover-
nor Hartranft was again nominated for the office of
Chief Magistrate of his native State. This time he
was unanimously placed in nomination by the Repub-
lican party, the only instance in which a Governor had
no opposition in convention for a second term in the
history of Pennsylvania. This time he was elected
by a majority of over 12,000. Immediately upon his
retirement from the Governorship of Pennsylvania
President Hayes appointed him Postmaster of the city
of Philadelphia, which position he now holds.
Governor Hartranft at present holds the position of
Commanding General of the National Guard of Penn-
sylvania, by appointment of Governor Hoyt. Presi-
dent Johnson appointed him Colonel of the 34th Reg-
iment of the U. S. Army, dating from the 28th of
July, 1866, but as he intended to retire to civil life
he declined the appointment by suitable acknowledg-
ment.
In the Convention of the Republican party, held at
Cincinnati, in the spring of 1876, for the purpose of
nominating a candidate for President of the United
States, Governor Hartranft's name was presented by
