The Herodian Dynasty

Second Generation

2. Antipater2 the Idumean II (Antipas1 ) birth date unknown. Antipater died circa 46 B.C.E. assassinated by poisoning.(45) Malichus, by bribery, persuaded the butler to poison Antiper's cup, which was used at a feast they were both to attend. He later denied all knowledge of any plot.

He married Cypros. Cypros became the mother of Pheroras after 74 B.C.E. Cypros became the mother of Joseph after 74 B.C.E. Cypros became the mother of Phasaelus before 74 B.C.E. Cypros became the mother of Herod the Great circa 70 B.C.E.

Antipater became the father of Pheroras after 74 B.C.E. Antipater became the father of Joseph after 74 B.C.E. Antipater became the father of Phasaelus before 74 B.C.E. Antipater became the father of Herod the Great circa 70 B.C.E. For help in conquening Jerusalem, Antipater was honored by Gaius Julius Caesar, in 47 B.C.E., by being granted Roman citizenship.(46) 3. However, when Caesar, after some time, had finished that war, and was sailed away for Syria, he honored Antipater greatly, and confirmed Hyrcanus in the high priesthood; and bestowed on Antipater the privilege of a citizen of Rome, and a freedom from taxes every where; and it is reported by many, that Hyrcanus went along with Antipater in this expedition, and came himself into Egypt. And Strabo of Cappadocia bears witness to this, when he says thus, in the name of Aslnius: "After Mithridates had invaded Egypt, and with him Hyrcanus the high priest of the Jews." Nay, the same Strabo says thus again, in another place, in the name of Hypsicrates, that "Mithridates at first went out alone; but that Antipater, who had the care of the Jewish affairs, was called by him to Askelon, and that he had gotten ready three thousand soldiers to go along with him, and encouraged other governors of the country to go along with him also; and that Hyrcanus the high priest was also present in this expedition." This is what Strabo says.(0)

Herod the Great was appointed Governor of Galilee in 45 B.C.E.(47) Josephus tells us that Herod was fifteen years of age; but in this case Josephus was wrong, and from his own writings. He later tells us that Herod was seventy years old when he died, and he became king eight years after he became a governor. His brother Phasaelus became governor of Jerusalem at the same time.

Phasaelus was appointed Governor of Jerusalem in 45 B.C.E.(48) He envived the fame of his brother Herod, while he himself was a competant administrator, managing the governmental affairs properly and not abusing his authority. He was ambitious and he worked to deserve the fame he desired. He made himself much loved by the residents of Jersulem. It led to a greater respect, on behalf of his subjects, for Antipater. (49) He was described by Josephus as a 'man that had distinguished himself for piety and justice, and love of his country.'(50)
