E. M .Sprott Family Bible

Hello Paul,
Here is what we have on the Sprott's:

E. Mac and Ann Rebeccah (Cathcart) Sprott

E. M. Sprott recorded the following about his family history in his bible.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Grandfather Hughey Sprott came to America from Ireland about 1793 and married Mary Spratt (an Irish woman) of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in 1794 and moved to Lincoln County, North Carolina. My father James Sprott was born in 1795 and at the age of 28, in 1823, married my mother Ann Tefapaugh, a German lady and moved to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina where I was born in 1824. Grew up and at the age of 28 years moved to Texas in the year 1853."

E. M. was born June 20th, 1824 and Ann was born October 11th, 1831. E. M. and Ann had seven children. James Arno was born March 9th, 1849, Charles Mach was born December 18th, 1850, and Mary Ann was born February 20th, 1853. These first three were born in North Carolina, then the family headed west. Henry Lee was born January 19th, 1855, Aultna Rebeccah was born November 16th, 1856, Thomas L. was born March 18th, 1859, and Elum Labe was born February 6th, 1862. These last four were all born in Texas. E. M. fought in the Civil War and returned home after its conclusion. Ann Cathcart Sprott died in 1866 in the year after the war was over. In 1867 E. M. married again. He and his second wife Louise had a boy named Joe.

The following is an excerpt from a letter written by Iola Cope to her mother Maude (Sprott) Cope, about a visit to the Sprott Ranch in Texas in October of 1943. Iola is James Arno Sprott's granddaughter and E. M. and Ann's great-granddaughter.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Dear Mom and Dad,

Well last Thursday Louise called me and said she and Jimmy were going down home over the weekend and asked me if I wouldn't like to go along. I was just thrilled to pieces. So I met Great Uncle Joe, Grampa Jim's half-brother, the youngest of the family and the only child by great-granddad E. M. Sprott's second wife. Uncle Joe has the family record and it sure is interesting. I'm going to relate it to you and I hope you get it straight. My great-great-great-grandfather, Hughey Sprott came to America in 1772 from Ireland with two other brothers. Hughey Sprott married an Irish woman and their son, James Sprott married a full-blooded German woman, and their son, Elam Mac Sprott, married Ann Cathcart, your grandmother (Oh yes, They settled in North Carolina). E. M. Sprott and Ann Cathcart had three children: Grandpa Jim, Charles Mac Sprott, and Aunt Mary before they left North Carolina and come to Texas. They were on the road three months among Indians until they finally ran into someone and he told them about a homestead with a newly built log cabin and took him to the owner of it. So Great-grandpa E. M. Sprott swapped his horses and buckboard for the house and the land. That was down there in the valley pretty close to where Uncle Joe lives now. Well, E. M. Sprott and his family moved three times before they filed on the place where Uncle Joe lives now. Uncle Joe said that grandpa Jim helped build all of the fences and rock and log buildings that are there today. I saw a real old rock fence still as good as new and Uncle Joe said that Great-grandpa E. M. and Grandpa Jim built it and the barn too. It's part rock and part log, but they built it. Uncle Joe has built a new house and everything as modern as any house in town now. They have a beautiful place. Mom you would sure get a thrill I know. It sure did thrill me. They have a big low rambling house with large rooms and a bathroom. I just fell in love with the house and everyone in it. They were all so sweet to me.

Great-grandpa E. M. Sprott fought in the civil war but came back. Grandpa Jim was 15 and just barely missed having to go. Great-grandma Ann Cathcart Sprott died in 1866 in the year after the civil war was over. In 1867 E. M. married again. I have forgotten her name and then uncle Joe was born. Grandpa Jim was born in 1849 - March 9th to be exact. Uncle Joe and I figured had he lived he would be 94 today. He married in 1876 (I believe) to America J. Dawson. There aren't any Dawsons left down there now, Uncle Joe said, so I can't find out anything about them. Uncle Joe doesn't remember seeing Grandpa Jim except once when grandpa was about 20 or 21. He came down from where he was living at Buffalo Gap in a buckboard driven by great big oxen. He had come after a load of wheat. Aunt Mary said that was the last time she saw him. He said they heard that Grandpa Jim lived in Alamogordo, New Mexico, but didn't know he had gone to Kansas until they heard some way that he had died in Kansas. Uncle Joe said he heard his father say that Grandpa Jim had gone up the trail once, the Chisholm Trail, and he said he bet that was why he finally went to Kansas, because he had seen the country around Dodge City and liked it

Grandpa must have been the roamer of the family because all the others stayed right around the old home place. I don't know if any of the others are living besides Aunt Mary (Cousin Annie's mother) and Uncle Joe. Aunt Mary doesn't hear very well and when Uncle Joe introduced me she thought he said daughter instead of granddaughter and said, "Oh, your poor daddy" and even started crying and grabbed me in her arms. It sure got me. I didn't even think of that because it had been so long. It didn't last long though, and she stood and just looked at me for a long time. I guess she was trying to see some resemblance but I don't think she did. She soon figured I was his granddaughter and said she didn't know what to ask me first. She said that when Grandpa Jim died someone of his family wrote her and asked if she had a picture of him. She had the only one that anyone has ever seen and seemed to be the only picture. She sent it to them though, and I suppose it was Aunt Ollie (Olive Sprott Tolson) that wrote her and said the youngest boy looked just like him. She (Aunt Mary) kind of had the kids mixed-up though. She kept getting you (Maude) and Ollie mixed -up. I don't think she ever got it straight who I belonged to, only that Jim was my grandfather. I think Aunt Ollie must have written her for a while but stopped and Aunt Mary never heard anymore from anyone. Aunt Mary was quite put out that I could only stay a while with her and insisted that the next time I must stay all night with her and we would have a big visit.

She is such a sweet old thing too. Aunt Mary's boy, the oldest boy I believe, has her living with him and Aunt Mary has her place leased out. All her kids have their own places and all Uncle Joe's kids have large places of their own. Uncle Joe's place is about four or five hundred acres and he has sheep, cows, horses, pigs, chickens, turkeys and cotton and acres and acres of pasture. Uncle Joe certainly does all right too. He goes in for houses. My He has some fine ones and he has three thoroughbred stallions. Two are quarter horses and one is a race horse named Happy Jack. I just love that place. In fact I am very much in love with Texas, that part of it anyway. One thing you can say with the exception of me, the Sprotts are on general rule a nice-looking family all the way through. Uncle Joe looks like Abraham Lincoln and his kids are all fairly good-looking. Doc was a very good-looking boy - you can tell because he still is, and Darrel is nice-looking. Cousin Annie said Louise and I favored, too. I don't think so, though. Aunt Mary is real small but of course is stooped awfully now. She doesn't wear glasses and she quilts all the time. She has quilted seven this summer and has all she can do this winter piled-up. She has made a quilt for all her nieces and nephews so far. Maybe she will make one for me. Ha. She will be 91 in February. Her husband lived to be 94. He has been dead for about six years now. I am back home now and very anxious to get this letter to you. Francis wasn't the slightest bit interested in my experiences, in fact, almost told me so - so you suffered. Better have Betty read this to you or someone, as it is pretty mixed-up. Bye, now.
Love, Iola"

Thanks again,
Dan Avery
