Notes by Dr. Mildred Smith: (Jenny) Janet Hendry MacDonald, baptised 7 June 1795, d/o George Hendry & Susannah Bulyea, m. Alexander McDonald (Both of Wickham Parish) by John Colwell, Justice of the Quorum for Queens County, in presence of Daniel Black and John Holm. Donald MacDonald 1764 -1842. Born Isle of Skye, Scotland. As a youth landed in Halifax, NS.  A shipmate stole his sea chest leaving him destitute. He worked his way to St. John, NB and enlisted in a British Regiment. Beside him in ranks stood a short, small Irishman who had difficulty understanding their officer's orders. When the Irishman made a number of mistakes the officer struck him across the face with the flat of his sword. Donald MacDonald - 6" tall - knocked the officer down, seized the little Irishman's arm and fled into the near-by woods between St. John and the Kennebecasis River. Although they evaded search parties the Irishman returned to camp and a charge of desertion. But MacDonald's offense was punishable by death, so he fled on. Two girls on a farm befriended him, hid his uniform, fed him, and hid him when a searching party arrived.  A farmer named Smith employed him at Pollet River. When he wanted to marry Ann Smith, the farmer's daughter, her father went to Fredericton and got him a pardon on provision he buy a substitute to serve in the army in his place. Donald and Ann farmed at Canaan, had a grist mill, and reared 12 children.  In 1842 he was visiting his son Lewis, at MacDonald's Corner, he died and was buried there, and 11 years later his wife was buried at New Canaan.
