Birth*between 1620 and 1622 Thomas Whittier was born between 1620 and 1622 at Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.1,2
He was the son of Richard Whittier and Mary Rolfe.1
Note*1638 Thomas Whittier The Whittiers in England are from the section in th south of England centering in Wilshire and Hampshire, Thomas sailed with his cousin, John Rolff, wife Ann Green and daughter, Hester from Southampton, in the ship Confidence, of London, on April 24, 1638, the destination being New England. Ruth Green who was in some way related to Ann Green also accompanied them. He was listed as a servant of John Rolfe. This probably signified merely an assignment of services in payment of a loan of passage money. In early colonial days this was a common practice among young men wanting to come to America. Nothing is known of him during the succeeding seven years, but it is supposed that he lived with John Rolfe at Newbury, Mass to whom he was apprenticed in England.

Thomas was a large man, over 6 ft. and over 300 lbs.

He settled first in Salisbury, Mass., on the north shore of the Merrimac River, not far from its mouth. He later lived for a time in Newbury, and in 1648 moved to Haverhill, settling in the eastern part of the town, about 3 miles from the center of the village. There he built a log house in which he lived for years, and then in 1660 be built a frame house, now widely known as the Whittier Homestead and the birthplace of one of his great-great-grandsons, John Greenleaf Whittier, the poet. He lived a quiet, peaceful life. He was of the Quaker faith and refused to guard against the Indians. The Indians frequently visited him and the family often heard them in the stillness of the evening, whispering beneath the windows, and saw them peep in upon the little group of defenseless beings. Friend Whittier always treated them civilly and hospitably and they never molested him or his family.

On May 30, 1651, Thomas was appointed by the General Court to lay out the boundaries of the plantation. In 1652 in the division of "plow land" he was granted Lot 13 of 7 1/2 acres. He was admitted as a "freeman" by the General Court May 23, 1666, the delay in granting him the franchise being due to his religious beliefs, and a direct result of his signature to a petition against the persecution of the Society of Friends. He was one of the contributors to a fund to induce a blacksmith to settle in Haverhill as the colony was in sore need of one. He was made a member of the Trial Jury in 1654 and 1666, and of the Grand Jury in 1668, 1677, and 1678. In June 1669 he was made constable of Haverhill and in 1682 was a selectman. In 1669 he asked; to be excused on condition that he find some other person satisfactory to the authorities to take his place. Offices were forced on people at that time. Thomas sered on many committees in the town, and in 1686 he was a "lot-layer," an important office. He was always a respected member of the community.

Thomas received a fair education. He was an excellent penman and specimens of his handwriting exit today.

His wife Ruth survived him about fifteen years. They had ten children.
