Birth* | 23 March 1611 | William Allen was born on 23 March 1611 at Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.1 |
He was the son of William Allen.
Note* | 1638 | William Allen William Allen first settled at Newbury MA, which granted him four acres of planting ground on Deer Island on 19 June 1638. In 1641 he received a house lot of 4 acres and 4 acres of upland, but this was probably only the recording of an earlier grant, for he had left Newbury and settled at Salisbury MA before this. The list of original settlers of Salisbury MA in 1639 included #28 "Wm Allin". William Allen (or Allin) of Salisbury, house-carpenter, received land in Salisbury in the first division, and again in 1640. Here he was elected Constable and sworn in 9 April 1650. At Salisbury, he was taxed 11s 6p on 25 December 1650, on the rate made to raise L30 for the minister. His name appears on the list of "townsmen and commoners" on 3 February 1650/1651. He was taxed 12s3d on 18 July 1652. On 1 May 1654 he was one of the signers of an agreement between the inhabitants of the old town and those of the new town of Amesbury. He received land in the division of 1654. He signed a petition on 19 May 1658 about church matters. He served on a Grand Jury at Salisbury 10 April 1666. He was appointed to inventory the estate of Elizabeth Blaisdale in 1667. In the Salisbury records he is commonly given the title "Mr." William was active in buying and selling real estate. In 1656 he sold property, calling himself a "house carpenter" in the deed. In 1657, Allen paid L1:18s:2d toward the town's purchase of Samuel Hall's farm of 100 acres, and was later recorded as owning one of the lots on this farm. With Edward Gove in May 1662 he purchased "about 6 score acres" in Salisbury. He sold 14 acres of upland for L10 in July 1662, and a 40 acre lot in "Salisbury newtown" on 16 November 1663. He and his father-in-law Richard Goodale shared a 12 acre lot bought from John Ilsley on 14 April 1664, for which Allen gave Ilsley a four acre planting lot. Allen and Richard Hubbard bought 160 acres at Amesbury 14 April 1670. On 13 February 1671 William, calling himself "husbandman", bought a quarter interest in the old saw mill in Salisbury for L65. He also bought an 8 score acre lot of upland with Richard Hubbard, and on 22 January 1673/1674 exchanged other land for Hubbard's share of this tract. On 29 December 1677 he exchanged land with John Stevens, acquiring about 11 acres of upland, and on the same day deeded an 'ysland of upland' to Thomas Bradbury for about four acres of upland and swamp. Much of this land he deeded to his children. On 20 December 1672 William deeded to his son John upland and meadow. On 14 November 1679 he deeded about 4 acres to his daughter Abigail, wife of Henry Wheeler. He conveyed about 11 acres to his daughter Mary and her husband George Hews on 29 December 1679. On 6 December 1683 he sold his son Benjamin his "great lot of upland in Amsbery being about 8 score acres" for L60. Benjamin had already paid 200 bushels of salt and was to pay further 2,000 merchantable cedar clapboards and 12,000 cedar shingles. His son-in-law Peter Ayer had removed to Haverhill MA, and represented his father-in-law at the Essex court held 14 April 1668 when Moses Bradstreet and Nathaniel Elithorpe charged them with trespass for marking trees on the plaintiff's land and claiming it belonged to Allen. Apparently the Court initially ruled in favor of Allen and Ayer, but upon review on 13 October 1668 the verdict was that the land did not belong to Allen. William appeared in court 9 October 1677, when Joseph Greely sued him and his son Jeremy "For the son's taking away a horse without his knowledge and not returning him." The horse evidently had been lost, but the matter was adjusted. William died in Salisbury 18 June 1686. Savage gives the date of his will as 16 April 1674; other sources say "16 April or September 1674". Codicil dated 7 November 1676; will proved in Boston 22 July 1686 (during the Andros administration). The will names wife Ann, who died before it was probated, sons John, William, Benjamin, Richard and Jeremiah; daughters Abigail Wheeler, Hannah Ayer, Mary Hewes and Martha Hubbard. Colket adds that he was a Ship owner. in 1638 at Essex County, Massachusetts.2 |

Birth* | 29 June 1594 | Richard Goodale was born on 29 June 1594 at Downham, Norfolk, England.1 |
He was the son of John Goodale and Bridget Portler.1
Marriage* | 22 October 1622 | Richard Goodale married Dorothy Whiterent on 22 October 1622 at Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. |
Note* | 1625 | Richard Goodale When John Goodale made his will in 1625, Richard was presumably not in England as his father did not know whether or not he was living, and, all the other legatees being named with care, it would seem that he did not know the names of Richard's two children. Richard was back in Yarmouth, county Norfolk, England in 1637 when he and his step-mother were defendants in a Chancery suit. By 1638 a Richard Goodale had settled in Newbury, where the Toppans were living, and where Mrs. Elizabeth Goodale arrived, so far as we know, at about the same time. He brought with him a wife, Dorothy, and two children. He was granted planting ground at Newbury on 19 June 1638. Again in April 1639 the town granted 'To Richard Goodale a foure acre planting lott on the neck on the point. Goodale, or Goodell, as he wrote the name, soon left Newbury to become one of the first settlers of Salisbury, and received land there in the first division. Salisbury was settled in 1639; the date of the first division is not given. The list of original settlers of Salisbury MA shows #59 "Rich: Goodale". Richard Goodale (or Goodell) of Salisbury, "planter" and "turner," received land in the first division in 1639, and again in 1643. He is said to have been a famous hunter. On 3 February 1650/1651, Goodale was on a list of those accepted as townsmen and commoners. He was taxed 14s there on a rate made 25 December 1650 to raise L30 "for Mr. Woster" -- the Rev. Mr. William Worcester, the first minister of Salisbury. He served on the grand jury at the County Court in 1652 and 1654. He was on the tax list of 18 July 1652, and was one of the signers of an agreement between the inhabitants of the old town and the new town on 1 May 1654. In 1654 he shared in a division of land by the town. On 19 May 1658 he signed a petition about church matters. He received land in 1654. When the town bought Mr. Hall's farm, Richard Goodale paid L1:3s:1p in 1657 toward that purchase, and owned lot number ten. Richard Goodale Sr. of Salisbury, describing himself as a turner, sold ten acres of upland to Cornelius Conner for L5 on 1 April 1663. On 14 Apr 1664, calling himself a husbandman, he bought a 12 acre planting lot from John Ilsley. Goodale's son-in-law William Allin deeded Ilsley a four acre lot on the same day, and half of the 12 acre lot was assigned him by Goodale in exchange. Wife Dorothy died 27 January 1664/1665 at Salisbury. Richard did not long survive her. He lived with his son-in-law William Allen for over four months before his death, and in the inventory of his estate was a recod of 10s a week due Allen from May 3rd to Sept 16th, for Goodale's "dyet and attendanc." He died in September or October 1666. His will is dated 7 June, codicil 8 September, proved 9 October 1666. He left half his estate to his son Richard Goodell of Boston, and half to his daughter "Ann wife to William Allen of the towne of salisbury." He mentioned his "goods housings Lands orchards pastures meadoe ether marsh or upland and all my other Land both plow Land or any other Land and all my Catell with the rest of my goods." To his "granddaughter hubburd" he left one cow. Cornelus Coner, formerly his servant, was to have all his wearing apparell, "both Lining and wooling" -- Cornelus was about 21 at the time of Goodale's death. Goodale named "Loving bretherin" (possibly a church relationship) "edward french and Philip Challis, and Richad wels" as overseers and his son as executor. Inventory taken 4 October 1666 shows over 90 acres of land worth L197; three calves, five cows, 4 swine worth L28; 1/8 share in a bark, L20. The estate was divided by Richard Goodale and William Allen on 4 December 1666. in 1625. |
