"The Murphys in North Carolina have been known for two hundred years for their contributions to political, religious, and social life in this colony and state. The name was originally McMurchie, but was changed to Murphy after Gaelic was suppressed. They originally came from the Island of Arran, on the west coast of Scotland and they belonged to the ancient race of Celts who refused to be Romanized or Anglicized. They later migrated to Ireland and were seated at Castle Ellis and Ouleartleagh in the barony of Ballaghkeen, in the eastern part of the country around Wexford. During the period from 1740 until the time of the American Revolution, large numbers of settlers from Scotland and Ireland settled in the Upper Cape Fear Valley of North Carolina. Among these were John Murphy, our first ancestor to come to this country, and his brothers, believed to be William and Timothy Murphy." in 1750.1 
Note*1776 He If it is true that Mary's parents were among the Murphy families who were in Duplin County, North Carolina around 1800 then she may be a second or third generation descendant of immigrants to North Carolina from Ireland in the early 1700's. The Murphy emigration excerpt on the left is a perspective on one of these families. The surname list links to the database of all researched names, including many Murphys who lived in the Duplin/Sampson County area between 1780 and 1830. in 1776.1

Balkcom was born circa 1838 at Lowndes County, Georgia; Baucom Family Book asserts a son of James Balkcom and Mary Balkcom - lived in the 1860 census adjacent to them, apparently on their farm since he had no real estate listed of his own. If their son, would make him the oldest or second oldest.1 
 He was the son of James E. Balkcom and Mary (Polly) Murphy. 
Marriage*circa 1859 John W. Balkcom married Nancy (?) circa 1859 at Dale County, Alabama; USA, Census record lists them as married within the year.2

John W. had no land listed, so probably lived on James' farm. He was listed with $75. personal estate.3

Balkcom married Lucinda Jane Deal on 20 December 1856 at Henry County, Alabama; Marriage is inferred from Joseph D. and Lucinda ("Cinda") living in household of James E. Balkcom in 1860. Also refer to e-mail from Civil War Researcher Al Medcalf noting "A Lucinda Balkum from Henry County Alabama drew a widow's pension on Joseph D. Balkcom". On file also is an "Affidavit for Witnesses to Application of Widows", where Ivey Balkcom attests to Confederate military service of Joseph Balkcom, supporting a widow's pension.3,4

He enlisted in Clopton, AL for a period of 3 years. Ivey Balkcom, also of the household of James E. Balkcom, enlisted later in the year.6,7,8.4,5

Death*circa 1864 He died circa 1864 at Barnsville, Lamar County, Georgia; Barnesville, Lamar County, Georgia, USA, Died of wounds received in the Battle of Atlanta: "J. D. Belcom, Company D, 57th Regiment". Researcher Al Medcalf believes this is Joseph D. Balkcom, supported by Dale County origin of the Alabama 57th and absence of any other reference in this unit to a Belcom. He reports that "These soldiers died in the summer of 1864 in hospitals here in Barnesville and were casualties of the Atlanta Campaign." Company D. of the 57th Alabama Infantry was in the battle with Gen Sherman in the Union taking of Atlanta in 1864.4

The 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Auburn, in the spring of 1862, under the requisition of President Jefferson Davis for 12,000 more Alabamians. Balkcom is listed as dying from exposure, about a month after his capture. According to the reference: " Conditions in the prison were harsh and the mortality rate was above average for a Union prison. Hot, humid summers and cold Midwestern winters took a heavy toll on prisoners already weakened by poor nourishment and inadequate clothing. The prison was overcrowded much of the time and sanitary facilities were inadequate. Pneumonia and dysentery were common killers but contagious diseases such as smallpox and rubella were the most feared. When smallpox infection became alarmingly high in the winter of 1862 and spring of 1863, a quarantine hospital was located on an island across the Mississippi River from the prison.

 He was the son of James E. Balkcom and Mary (Polly) Murphy. 
Note*1863 Ivey Balkcom Ivey and four his brothers were in the Civil War. Ivey was in the 57th
Alabama Infantry. He faught in the Battle Above the Clouds that was fought on the slopes of Lookout Mountain in Tennessee and Georgia, The Battle or Siege of Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi and The Battle Chickamauga, Catoosa County and Walker County, Georgia. Ivey returned to Dale County, Alabama after four years of war.

Benjamin (Ivey's brother) died of pneumonia. Will was never hear from.
The fourth brother, Joeseph was wounded and died. The fifth brother, Aaron returned after four years of war. in 1863. 
Milit-Beg*22 September 1863 He began military service on 22 September 1863 at Alabama Fort Gaines, Pollard, Alabama, USA, Confederate Army during the Civil War. He enlisted as a private in Company D, 57th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Service records show he enlisted at Pollard, AL, for a period of three years. "18 yo, hazel eyes, light hair, 5'10", born Dale Co, farmer, received bounty of $50. The name Ivy "Balkcom" appears on a description list and bounty roll of the 57th Regiment Alabama Infantry Co D, Private, list dated 21 Nov 1863. Separate records show he was discharged at Charlotte, NC in 1865. He later was a witness to the widow's pension application of Lucinda Balkcom, wife of brother Joseph D. Balkcom.1,4
