Note* | (?) Bristow Note: The Bristow family hails from the East Riding area of Yorkshire County, England, in the Southeast part of the British Isle. The Bristows of Southeast england are believed to be descended from Stephen Fitz-Hammon whose heirs settled in the Weald of Surrey at Burstow ( Pre-Norman locale meaning Battle-Bur-Place-Stow) and in time the name was changed to deBurstow and then gradually to Bristow(e) or Bristo. Stephen Fitz-Hamon was a descendant of the Hamon Dapifer, Sheriff of Kent, who was with William the Conqueror at Hastings in 1066. This sheriff was a cousin of William the Conqueror. His father, Hamon Dentatus, was killed in a large family fued at Val es Dunes, 1047, over William's right to the throne of the Normans. Other documents state that the Bristow name means, " the place of the bridge, or place where the ford in the river is located." From this was derived the name of the city first named Bristow and later spelled Bristol. The spelling of Bristol did not occur until the mid 1500's. From Bristowe Families on Rootweb.com by Barry Carlson: "The 'Bristowe Familyies of Maplebeck, Nottinghamshire and Twyford, Derbyshire' had their origins in Maplebeck prior to the 14th century. Maplebeck is in the county of Nottingham. The Twyford branch developing as a result of two brothers acquiring land in 1571 from the Earl of Shrewsbury and setting up an Estate and developing Twyford Hall in the Parish of Twyford & Stenson. Meanwhile, the Maplebeck family through marriage acquired numerous lands around Maplebeck including Beesthorpe Hall ( in Nottinghamshire ) and the Grange Manor. Samuel Bristowe of Twyford in 1764 bought Beesthorpe Hall and its associated estates from his kinsman Thomas Bristowe and the ownership of lands at both Maplebeck and Twyford came back into one branch of the family. On Samuel's death in 1818, the extent of these lands was recorded in his Will and included Beesthorpe Hall and estates, Grange Manor and various lands and tenements at Caunton, Earlshaw, Hucknall, Kersall, Norwell, Woodhouse and Sutton in Ashfield; all in Nottinghamshire. Also, Twyford Hall and estates, and various lands and tenements at Findern and Repton; all in Derbyshire. Bristowes have been Regarders (guardians) of Sherwood Forest, Sheriff of Nottingham, Barristers and County Court Judges, Members of Parliament for Newark and Director of Education for Nottinghamshire, amongst other deeds........Though, in the 18th century, the management of their Nottinghamshire Estates, with the exception of those years when Samuel Bristowe ( 1736-1818), had tenure, does not appear to have been outstanding. There was also a rather strained relationship between samuel (1766-1846), the son of Thomas, and his Uncle Samuel (1736-1818), who had inherited the estates but remained unmarried. This lead to the younger samuel going to New York in 1795 and becoming involved in the trading activities run by a John Banks of that city." The Bristowe family of Beesthorpe is listed in the National Register of Archives of Great Britain, File F1209; 1537-1931: Notts (Beesthorpe, etc.) and misc Derbys (Twyford, etc.) deeds, family and estate papers NRA 8136 Bristowe. Other lines of Bristows are noted, such as, Bristow of Broxmore Park where Robert Bristow, Esquire of Broxmore Park, County Wiltshire, is noted in the Burke's Landed Gentry book. Robert Bristow's lineage is noted to be from Sir John de Burstow, in Surrey, assesor for that county in 1294, cupbearer to Henry IV. From this line is Robert Bristow Esquire, born 1643, who established himself in North America in 1660 on the restoration of Charles II. From the Directory of Yorkshire County, England, on page 65, a Thomas Bristow of Newport is listed as a boot and shoe maker. On page 195 George Francic Bristow is listed as agrocer located at 83 Queen Street in Hull, Yorkshire County. Charles Bristow is listed on page 124 as being a tea dealer located at 14 Queen Street in Hull, and William Bristow is listed as a shopkeeper located at 10 William Street in Hull. Note: Nottinghamshire and the county of Yorkshire are right next to each other. It cannot be proven as of yet, but it could be possible that our Bristow line from Blacktoft , division of Laxton, Archdeaconry of the East Riding of Yorkshire County could be linked to the Bristowes of Beesthorpe Hall of Nottinghamshire. |

Note* | Nathaniel Guptill Thomas was in Portsmouth in 1670 and was taxed in 1672 with his wife Mary Abbott. He sold property to Nathaniel Fryer in 1674. He received from Mary's step-father and mother a little log house and one-half acre of land 30 June 1680. " The first record of the Guptill (Gubtail) name in this country is of Thomas Gubrail, who may have been born in England, Scotland or Wales. He was in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1670 and on the tax list in 1672. His wife, Mary Abbott, born about 1652 was the daughter of Walter and Mary (or possibly Sarah) of Portsmouth. They received a deed of a log house and one half acre from her mother and stepfather, Henry Sherbourne (from the Genealogy Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire) in 1680. Thomas was alive in 1686 but had certainly died before 1696, when his widow married William Caverly. Shewas alive as late as 1732 when she and her two Caverly children sold rights in the estate of her second husband. There are no birth records for Guptill children, but it is assumed that the following, all mentioned in that area were children of Thomas and Mary (Abbott) Guptill. Only Nathaniel is known to have had male heirs. (Taken from "One line of Guptill Descent" complied by Claude W. Barlow, Ph. D. Worcester, MA, 1963. Copy found at NEHGS, Boston, MA. "The first record of the Guptill (Gubtail) name in this country is of Thomas Gubtail, who may have been born in England, Scotland or Wales. He was in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1670 and on the tax list in 1672. His wife, Mary Abbot, born about 1652 was the daughter of Walter and Mary (or possibly Sarah) of Portsmouth. Note | He Note: Quoted from "Early Families of Gouldsboro, Maine" by Muriel Sampson Johnson:"Nathaniel Gubtail was born in Wales (I,Kerry Kosky, do not agree~I believe he must have been born in Portsmouth) but was not baptized until 11 Nov 1716 when he was living in Berwick, Maine. He died sometime after 1762. Nathaniel married Mary Isselton, daughter of Benjamin Isselton,in Portsmouth, New Hampshire." "a mason" Tax abated in 1713, living in Berwick, bp with wife Mary & 4 children on 11 Nov 1716 Quoted from"The Guptill Genealogy" by Grace Guptill and Zula Guptill Holmes: Nathaniel Guptill, who was probably a brother of Thomas Guptill, was born about 1680. Rev. Sinnett says he was born in England but I believe the evidence is that he was born in or near Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was living in South Berwick, Maine in 1762. Noyes states that Nathaniel married twice and there seems to be support in that he married Mary Issalton in Portsmouth in the North Church on September 30, 1708 and his first child Mary was born in 1705. The records of the old church of South Berwick give the names of the parents of the Guptill children that were baptized there as Nathaniel Guptill and Mary. After this Nathaniel seem to have owned quite a lot of land at Kittery, Maine which was near his old home at South Berwick." Quoted from Gen Dic ME & NH: "Couple settled in South Berwick, Maine where children were baptised in Berwick Church 11 Nov 1716."

Note* | Thomas Guptill Thomas was in Portsmouth in 1670 and was taxed in 1672 with his wife Mary Abbott. They received a deed of a log house and one half acre from her mother and stepfather, Henry Sherbourne (from the Genealogy Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire) in 1680.Thomas was alive in 1686 but had certainly died before 1696, when his widow married William Caverly. She was alive as late as 1732 when sheand her two Caverly children sold rights in the estate of her second husband.
