3rd Worcester County Regiment
Massachusetts Militia

April 19th 1775

Lexington Alarm -

The men in the 2nd Mendon Company, Col. Ezra Woods 3rd Worcester County Regiment commanded by Captain William Jennison, marched from Mendon to Roxbury and then on to Cambridge commencing the 19th of April 1775. William Jennison's company was comprised of 40 specially trained "Minute Men". By order of the Provincial Congress these men were to be ready for battle with all necessary equipment only minutes after an alarm was sounded.

The 2nd Mendon Company was prepared to engage the British should they choose to retreat from Lexington and Concord via the only land route back to Boston.

Under constant attack by the Massachusetts Militia throughout their retreat, the British officers led their soldiers back to Boston via the shortest route possible. This required the British to utilize the same boats used when the march began the night before. After the inital attacks on the 19th it was feared that the British would regroup and attack using Boston as its base. Captain Jennison's men were moved closer to what could become the front line of battle at Cambridge. (see map above) As it became increasingly clear that the British were not prepared to continue attacks Captain Jennison began to release soldiers under his command for their return trip back to Mendon. The company's return to Mendon was completed on May 1, 1775.
