The 4th Mendon Company's 42 men were prepared to engage the British should they choose to retreat from Lexington and Concord via the only land route back to Boston.

Under constant attack by the Massachusetts Militia throughout their retreat, the British officers led their soldiers back to Boston via the shortest route possible. This required the British to utilize the same boats used when the march began the night before. After the inital attacks on the 19th it was feared that the British would regroup and attack using Boston as its base. Captain Nelson's men were moved closer to what could become the front line of battle at Cambridge. (see map above) As it became increasingly clear that the British were not prepared to continue attacks Captain Nelson and his men returned to Mendon on April 28, 1775.
