Browns in Orange County, VA
Descendants of Leonard & Sarah Kimbrough Brown

Chronology of the Browns in Orange County, VA

The following chronology attempts to trace the Browns (William, Elliot, Leonard, John and Francis) who live in fairly close proximity in the mid to late 1700s in Orange County, VA. No relationship has been proven for these Brown males.

Information on other persons are included, such as Thomas Kimbrough, John Noel, Robert Martin, William Sutton, etc. Thomas Kimbrough is the father of Sarah Kimbrough, wife of Leonard Brown. Robert Martin is the father of Richard Martin, whose grandson Richard Martin married Sarah Brown, granddaughter of Leonard Brown. The Martins lived on nearly adjacent land in both Orange County, VA and Caswell County, NC. Many Browns and Martins later migrated to Sumner County, TN. There is obviously a close connection between the Martin and Brown families. The importance of other persons mentioned is based on land transactions, marriages, etc.

A deed on p. 295 of Deed Book _ mentions Wm. Brown, John Noel, Eliot Brown at Madison's Mill Run*. I do not have a copy of this deed.

Orange County Deed Book _, p. 295

Many of the above deeds refer to Madison's Mill Run. This is a bit deceptive because there is a Madison's Mill near the western edge of Orange County next to Madison County. That is NOT the correct Madison Mill's Run. According to early land patent maps produced by Joyner, the stream is actually Madison Run and is located in the southern part of the county near Gordonsville.
