"Lineage--JOHN HASTINGS, of Abergavenny, 1st Lord Hastings, son and heir of Henry de Hastings, of Ashill, Norfolk (by Joane, his wife, sister and co-heir of George de Cantilupe, feudal baron of Abergavenny), and grandson of Henry Hastings, and Ada, his wife, yst. dau and co-heir of David, Earl of Huntingdon, brother of William the Lion, King of Scotland. He was b. 6 May 1262, and s. his maternal uncle in the lordship of Abergavenny. He was one of the three competitors for the crown of Scotland in 1290 in right of his grandmother above-mentioned. He was sitting as a baron in Parliament 18 EDWARD I (1290), and was summoned by writs from 23 June, 23 EDWARD I (1295) to 8 Jan. 6 EDWARD II (1312-3). He m. 1stly, 1275, Isabel (d. 3 Oct. 1305), dau. of William, Earl of Pembroke, and had issue. He m. 2ndly, Isabel (d. 4 Dec. 1334), dau. of Hugh le Despencer, Earl of Winchester, by whom he had further issue. He d. 28 Feb. 1312-3, and was s. by his son, by his first wife,
JOHN, 2nd Lord Hastings, m. Juliana (who m. 2ndly, 1326, Thomas le Blount; and 3rdly, 1327, William, Lord Clinton, and d. 1 Nov. 1327), had a son,

"10. JOHN KNYVET, Knt., of Southwick, Northamptonshire, Hamerton,Huntingdonshire, and Mendlesham, Suffolk, etc. Knight of the shire for Northamptonshire, Sheriff of Northamptonshire, son and heir by his father's 1st marriage, born about 1394-5. He married before 1412 ELIZABETH CLIFTON, daughter of Constantine de Clifton, Esq., 2nd Lord Clifton, of Old Buckenham, Norfolk, by Margaret, daughter of Robert Howard, Knt. (descendant of King John) [see MARMION 11 for her ancestry]. She was born about 1392. They had ten children, including one son, John, Esq., and two daughters, Margaret and Joan (wife of Robert Toppes). He was present at the siege and fall of Harfleur in Sept. 1415, and took part in Kinh Henry V's second invasion of Normandy two years later. He fell briefly into French hands during the course of an engagement near Senlis in 1421, and being ransomed, fell heavily into debt, causing the alienation of some property. While he was later fighting with the royal army in Picardy, he was captured again and ransomed for £1000 by the French, requiring the mortgage of further property. In 1435 he was co-heir to his Weyland cousin, John Stretch, by which he inherited the manors of Charsfield, Brandeston, and Westerfield, Suffolk, and Oxborough, Norfolk. SIR JOHN KNYVET died 9 Nov. 1445. His widow, Elizabeth, was heiress in 1447 to her brother, John Clifton, Knt., by which she inherited Old Buckenham CVastle and other substantial property in Norfolk. She died before 8 Dec. 1461.".
