"Lineage--SIR ROGER TOWNSHEND, M.P. for Calne, Wilts, a lawyer of great eminence, temp. EDWARD IV (son of John Townshend, of Raynham, who d. 1465), was made Serjeant-at-law 1478, King's Serjeant-at-law 1483, and one of the Justices of the Court of Common Pleas 1484. He was knighted by RICHARD III 1484, m. Eleanor, dau. of William Lunsford, of Battle, Sussex (by Thomasine Barrington, who m. 2ndly, Philip Sydney, of Penshurst; and 3rdly, John Hopton). Sir Roger had with three daus. (who m. respectively Phillip Cressner, Ralph Castell, of Raveningham, and Thomas Wodehouse, of Kimberley), three sons. He d. 1493 (will dated 14 Aug. 1493, tomb at Raynham St. Mary), and was s. by his eldest son,
