Wiki: Charles Francis Adams, Sr.
He spent the most of his boyhood in St. Petersburg and London,
whilst his father,
John Quincy Adams ¤,
was minister to Russia and England.
He graduated from Harvard University in 1825;
studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1828.
He served three years in the lower house,
and two years in the upper house of the Massachusetts legislature.
In 1848 he was a delegate to the Buffalo convention, and elected president;
was the candidate for vice-president on the ticket with Mr. Van Buren;
was elected a representative from Massachusetts to the thirty-sixth congress,
and received the re-election to the thirty-seventh congress.
One of the most noted events of his life
was his appointment as minister to England during the civil war in America,
and though encountering the most bitter social hostility in England,
he maintained the right of his country,
and exercised the grandest qualities of true statesmanship
just where and when they were of priceless value.
He died Nov. 21, 1886, in Boston, Mass.
