A family of the first great capitalists of America. John Jacob Astor, the progenitor, was a 1784 immigrant from Waldorf, in the province of Baden, Germany. He built a huge empire in the fur trade and Manhattan real estate.

Who has not heard of the great New York hotel, the Waldorf-Astoria?

His son, William Backhouse Astor was known as "New York's Landlord" because of the extensive family holdings on Manhattan.

A great grandson emmigrated to England where he was made a Viscount, beginning a titled British Astor line of newspaper publishers, writers and politicians.  -30-
