He served in the lower house of the state legislature in 1811, 1812, 1813, 1816, 1817 and 1834, and in the state senate in 1814. He was a representative in the 21st congress, 1829-31, and is recorded as having given as a reason for declining a re-election that congress was no place for an honest man. The new state constitution of 1835 gave to the people the power of electing the governor and Mr. Dudley was the first governor so elected. He was re-elected in 1839, and was succeeded in 1841 by John Motley Morehead. He died in Wilmington, N.C., Oct. 30, 1855. BDNA  -30-
