Contents: |
né HATHORNE, Nathaniel
Notable writer of such well-known works as The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables, he also worked in Boston's customhouse, was surveyor of the port of Salem, and U.S. consul in Liverpoole, ENG.
He was born a Hathorne,
but added a "w" in his twenties.
Conjecture has it that this was to difference himself
from his ancestor, the Witch Judge, John Hathorne (1641-1717).
