MONROE, JAMES, fifth president of the United States, was born April 28, 1758,
in the county of Westmoreland, Va., and graduated at William and Mary college in 1776.
After his term of office as president expired (1825),
he retired to his residence in Loudoun county, Va., where he resided until 1831,
when he removed to New York city, and took up his residence with his son-in-law.
He died on the 4th of July, 1831,
so poor that he was buried at the expense of his relatives.
He had been twenty-six years in public service.
His presidency was known as the Era of Good Feeling.

1794 | Appointed envoy extraordinary to the court of Versailles (France) |
1796 | Recalled. |
1799-1702 | Governor of VA |
1803 | Appointed envoy extraordinary to France, to negotiate for the purchase of Louisiana |
1810 | Elected again to legislature |
1810 | Commissioned minister plenipotentiary to England |
1811/01 | Elected again governor of VA |
1811/04 | After reconciliation with Madison, accepted appointment as secretary of state |
1814/08-1815/03 | Secretary of war (while retaining post at State) |
1816 | Elected 5th President of the United States; reelected 1820 (unopposed) |
1816 | First president to have first been a U.S. senator |
1817 | First presidential inauguration to be held out of doors |

1824 | Monrovia, in now Liberia, named -- the only non-American capital city named after a U.S. President. |
