MONROE, JAMES, fifth president of the United States, was born April 28, 1758, in the county of Westmoreland, Va., and graduated at William and Mary college in 1776.

After his term of office as president expired (1825), he retired to his residence in Loudoun county, Va., where he resided until 1831, when he removed to New York city, and took up his residence with his son-in-law.

He died on the 4th of July, 1831, so poor that he was buried at the expense of his relatives. He had been twenty-six years in public service. His presidency was known as the Era of Good Feeling.  -30-
