An altogether remarkable man, of the sort with which the fledgling Republic was blessed several times over in those days.
The terms he negotiated with Great Britain,
in what is now called Jay's Treaty,
over G.B. withdrawal from posts in the Northwest Territories (vic. Ohio),
aroused bitter hostility in certain American quarters.
It is now generally recognized that he acted wisely,
granting compromises as the price of survival and avoided war with G.B. for a time.
