HUTCHINSON, Anne [1591-1643] -- American religious leader

née MARBURY, Anne

Immigrant to MBC from England, she was a brilliant thinker and speaker. She preached salvation by God's grace -- i.e. by individual intuition without regard to obedience to specific laws of church or state. The colony's leaders held the strict view of salvation by good works -- fasting, church attendance, honoring your elders, and so on. As her following grew, everyone was taking sides and a schism of the colony was threatened. "Covenant of Works" vs "Covenant of Grace" was the hot topic of the day.

Governor Winthrop and the Reverend Cotton took matters in hand and she was accused

antinomian: of or relating to the view that Christians are released from the obligation of observing moral laws.
of the heresy of antinomianism, treason and "traducing the ministers and their ministry". Despite giving good account of herself at her trial, the deck was stacked against her and she was convicted (1638).

Sentenced to banishment, she and a number of her followers emigrated to Rhode Island (1638), where they formed the first government in that colony.

After her husband's death (1642), she moved to Westchester County, NY, where she and her family were wiped out in an Indian attack the following year. One daughter survived the attack, and there were several older children who had left the nest and escaped the attack entirely.

There is a conjecture that one of her daughters married John Walker, father-in-law of Capt. James Sands ¤, the immigrant. No facts supporting this belief have been published.  -30-

Footnotes

Currently (1947) thought to be on the west side of the Hutchinson River, in Eastchester, just south of the present Boston Post Rd. [now Rt US-1]. I would place this in the small area bounded by: Boston Post Rd/US-1 on the N.W., Hutchinson River on the N.E., New England Thwy of the S.E., Conner St on the S.W. -R.
