Ivan the Terrible

He was the first ruler of Russia to assume the title of tsar. His long reign saw the conquest of Tartary and Siberia and subsequent transformation of Russia into a multiethnic and multiconfessional state. This tsar retains his place in the Russian tradition simply as Ivan Grozny. Commonly called in English Ivan the Terrible, he was the penultimate ruler of the house of Ryurik, Russia’s first dynasty, and one of Russia's most brutal and notorious rulers. WIKI  -30-
