Neubourg, Newberry, Newbery, Newborough, Newburgh, Newbury
Notable descendants of Thomas Newberry, of Dorchester MA [1594-1635].
Thomas Newberry, my 11th great grandfather,
came to the New England MBC probably in the Mary and John in 1630,
contemporaneously with the Winthrop Fleet.
Embarking on March 20 from Plymouth, DEV,
they arrived at Nantasket May 30 after a good passage.
This body of 140 souls settled in Dorchester and became known as the Dorchester Company.
Although separate from Winthrop's group,
they seem to have emmigrated with his knowledge and presumed approval.
Thomas was made Freeman 3 Sept 1634,
this being a formal act of enfranchisement within the colony,
and acted as representative for the town (1635).
In that same year,
the majority of the Dorchester Company were preparing to migrate to Windsor, CT,
with their pastor, the Rev. John Warham, when Thomas died.
