He was a man of many talents. One wonders how he found time for it all! As a Congressman, he pushed for various legislation:

Reduce the cost of postage from $.25 to $.05 in 1838.
Create the Bureau of Engraving and Patents.
Construct public buildings in Washington, DC, of marble or granite, not sandstone.
Construct the Dry Dock in Brooklyn.
Initiate first survey for the Transcontinental Railroad 1844.
While in Congress he began a movement to complete the Washington Monument, and he also started a practice of hanging the Presidential Portraits in the Rotunda.

Along the way, he buried four wives and was married for a fifth time when he died as a consequence of a broken femur.

1814	Made 100,000 oars and had them shipped to New York City

1826	Resigned his commission as colonel of 116th regiment
1827	Elected supervisor of the town of Windham
1829/01/12	Married wife #3 (Abigail Watson)
1830	Elected to NY State Senate
1833/03/08	Town of Prattsville set off from Windham; pop. 500
1835/03/16	Married wife #4 (Mary Watson)
1836	Elected Representative in Congress from 8th Cong. District
1836/03	Built 130' bridge over SchoharieKill
1842/11/08	Elected Representative in Congress from 11th Cong. District
1843/10/30	Established Prattsville Bank
1844	Elected president of Greene County Agricultural Society
1844	Moved the survey of a railroad route from the Mississippi to the Pacific
1844/02/28	Was aboard the Princeton when its great gun exploded, with much loss of life
1845/03/03	Congress adjourns; in 5 sessions, Pratt was never absent one day
1850/05/08	Proposes a "World's Convention" at New York City for 1852 (Sciam 5:34 p.266)
1851/07/08	Appointed a delegate to the World's Fair by the Mechanic's Institute in NYC
1854/03/31	Witnessed Estrampes garrotted at Havana for high treason
1939/09	Elected a member of the American Institute
