3rd Earl Russell
He was a man of principles, possessed of a keen intellect.
A prolific writer, he produced over 90 books.
While working on his definitive Principia Mathematica he discovered
what is now called Russell's Paradox:
If we have a class that is not a member of itself -
is it a member of itself?
If yes, then no, if no, then yes.
After discussions with Wittgenstein Russell
was forced to accept the view that mathematical statements
are tautologies,
not truths about a realm of logico-mathematical entities.
I think that this discovery "spoiled" the field for him,
as he never again worked intesively in mathematics.
1916 | A Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, he was dismissed for his pacifist views during World War I. |
1918 | Imprisoned for his pacifist views. |
1940 | His appointment to the philosophy faculty of the City College of New York is voided. |
1950 | Nobel prize in literature |
