A contract actress with Warner Brothers during the 1940s, she played supporting roles in a number of films. She came into her own in TV in the 1950s, and the industry Emmy Awards were said to be named for her. Later, she made a handful of Broadway appearances, and briefly wrote a newspaper column.
Although she sought the spotlight during her career, she spent her last years as a wealthy recluse.
She was married to Elliott Roosevelt,
son of President Roosevelt,
and to bandleader Skitch Henderson.
