Egbert Ludovicus Vielé of Waterford, NY, a member of the West Point Class of 1847,
had graduated with honors from the Albany Academy and
studied law before entering the Military Academy in 1842.
Upon graduation he began a career devoted to public service and
initiated more projects of lasting importance than almost any other man of his generation.
USMA Association of Graduates
He submitted plans for developing New York's Central Park,
but was beaten out of the competition by the Olmsted ?
and Vaux entry.
He and Olmsted were often thereafter competitors in various ventures.
He was involved in a bitter and very public divorce from the former
Teresa Griffin ¤
in 1871.
He is buried at West Point in a pyramidal tomb of his own design,
now a campus landmark.
