Father of the (U.S.) ConstitutionUnited States, POTUS 4
His distinctive contribution to the colonial cause was a deep knowledge and understanding of government and political philosophy. These resources first proved their value in 1776 when Madison helped to draft a constitution for the new state of Virginia, and later at the Constitutional Convention his skills in political science and his persuasive logic made him the chief architect of the new governmental structure and earned him the title "master builder of the Constitution".
His presidency (1809-1817) was chiefly marked by the
War of 1812 with Great Britain,
during which the British captured Washington
and burned the White House.
