Son of Secretary of War John Canfield Spencer, ¤
he was serving as Midshipman aboard the American training brig Somers
when a mutiny was discovered a-hatching and Somers,
found to be the head of it, was hung along with two co-conspirators
-- his paternal connection notwithstanding.
The incident was supposed to have been the model for Melville's Billy Budd.
