George served in the navy until 1891. He travelled the world and visited many areas of the British Empire. He also acquired many tattoos, and a parrot which he took home to England with him.
As a younger son of the Prince of Wales, he had no expectation of attaining the throne. However, six weeks after his elder brother, Albert Victor's, engagement to Mary of Teck, he (Albert) died of pneumonia, leaving their father, Albert Edward, the heir apparent to the throne upon the death of Queen Victoria. Victoria persuaded George to propose to Mary, and she accepted.
Victoria died in 1901 and Albert Edward acceded as King Edward VII.
He died in 1910, and George acceded as King George V.
