The only man ever appointed Chief Justice twice, Winthrop first assumed the office in 1701 when Chief Justice Stoughton died. Winthrop, however, held aspirations of becoming governor, and to further his cause, resigned his place on the bench to accept an appointment as agent of the Province. When Joseph Dudley was appointed governor instead, Winthrop's agency was rescinded and he returned home. In 1708, he was appointed Chief Justice again and served in that capacity until his death in 1717.
