In addition to an illustrious career as a mathematician,
culminating with the Wolf Prize in 1982 and the Steele Prize in 1985,
he was also an avid mountain-climber.
The Whitney-Gilman Ridge in New Hampshire was named for him and a cousin,
who were the first to climb it.
