Charter Applied for by the Cedarhurst Association

Capital Stock to be $25,000

Will Improve and Beautify the Grounds

An application has been prepared asking for a charter for the Cedarhurst cemetery Association of La Porte. The capital stock is to be $25,000, and the incorporators are A. N. McKay, I. R. Holmes and A. O. Blackwell. These gentlemen with J. Lobit, of Galveston, and H. Benne Henton, of La Porte, will constitute the directory of the association for the first year.

Announcement was made in the Chronicle last week, that the grounds which were laid out several years ago for cemetery purposes, were to be resurveyed and improved. Since the matters in that connection have progressed and plans matured for the improvements which will be pushed to an early completion. Speaking of the intentions of the new company, Mr. Holmes said yesterday:

"We will all add by purchase to the grounds which have already been dedicated for the purpose, and the cemetery will contain about fifty acres. We will also establish burying grounds near F street, north of town, for colored people. The cemetery will be fenced in and made stock proof. New streets and walks will be graded and shelled, all rubbish will be taken out and the grounds beautified. Trees will be trimmed up and shrubbery planted. Every improvement will be made to make a first-class burying ground. A suitable entrance will be erected on J street and a keeper will be placed in charge of the cemetery. Engineers have already been at work locating the old lines, and the surveying will be completed within the next few days."

As has already been stated in the Chronicle, the board of alderman has provided for the grading of Third street to connect with J street, leading to the entrance of the cemetery.
