Mrs. Carpenter’s Rites Held Today

Elderly Owens Cross Roads Resident Died Monday, Rites at 3

 

Funeral service for Mrs. John CARPENTER, 85, were held today at 3 p.m. from the Owens Cross Roads Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jack CAIN officiating.  Burial followed at Moon Cemetery.

 

Mrs. Carpenter, a lifelong resident of Owens Cross Roads community, and the oldest member of the Owens Cross Roads Methodist Church, died yesterday at 4 a.m.  She was the last survivor of her immediate family, the Brannum family.

 

She is survived be three daughters, Mrs. Mattie TURNER and Mrs. Allen MAPLES of Owens Cross Roads, and Mrs. Elizabeth CHANDLER of Vinemont, Ala.; three sons, Gordon CARPENTER of Owens Cross Roads, Harry CARPENTER of New Hope, and Woodrow CARPENTER of Bynum; 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

 

Grandchildren acted as pallbearers at the funeral.

J. W. Carpenter Taken By Death

 

John Watkins CARPENTER, 78, of Star Route, Owens Cross Roads, died shortly before midnight Monday at his home.  He had been ill about three years.

 

Funeral services at the Owens Cross Roads Methodist Church will be conducted by the Rev. E. M. DICKERSON, with burial in Moon Cemetery under the direction of Laughlin-Service.

 

Active pallbearers will be Harold CARPENTER, Max CARPENTER, Jim CARPENTER, Bill CARPENTER, Sammie MAPLES and Tom CHANDLER Jr.

 

A. H. ELLETT, M. F. MAPLES, James CAWTHORN, L. K. KENNEDY, F. L. DRAKE and W. E. SPRAGINS have been named honorary pallbearers.

 

Mr. Carpenter is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lavinia CARPENTER; three sons, George CARPENTER, Harvey CARPENTER and Woodrow CARPENTER; three daughters, Mrs. Mattie TURNER, Mrs. W. F. CHANDLER and Mrs. Allen MAPLES, and 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
