Head Crushed, Causing Death To Be Instant

Teacher, Farmer, 37, Working on Machine; Funeral Plans Delayed

Clifton Odell MANN Jr., 37, was killed instantly at 9:10 a.m. today when his head was crushed in a hay baler which he was repairing.  The accident occurred on the farm of his brother, John Davis MANN, near New Hope.  He was killed instantly.  Mr. Mann was apparently working with his head inside the mechanism when the power was accidentally turned on in some manner.

John Davis MANN and several workers on the farm were with C. O. MANN Jr. when the accident occurred, after he had given instructions himself as to the moving parts of the machine.  The result of the movement was the turning on of the power.  A piece of the machinery struck him in the top of the head, and the force of the first blow was reported to be so great that he died instantly.

Butler Brothers Funeral Home of New Hope will be in charge of arrangements, but the time of the services will not be announced until the arrival of relatives can be ascertained.

Two brothers, James MANN and Wilson MANN, and a sister, Mrs. R. A. CARPENTER, are on vacation in Cuba; another brother, Dewey Thomas MANN, is in service in Honolulu.

Mr. Mann was a resident of Owens Cross Roads, where he had extensive farming interests, and was a science teacher at the New Hope High School.  He previously taught veterans farm training classes at New Hope.  He was a graduate of Auburn and a veteran of considerable combat service during World War II with the Air Force.

Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Mattie Bell Tabor MANN, who is a teacher at the Owens Cross Roads School; two sons and one daughter; the parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. O. MANN Sr. of New Hope, and a number of brothers and sisters.
