Mrs. Sims Dies Of Heart Attack News of Son's Death In Chicago Is Fatal Shock to OXR Mother


Mrs. Elsa Byrd Simms, 72, of Owens Cross Roads, and her son, Carl Byrd, 30, of Chicago, Ill., will be buried in double funeral rites Monday from the Holiness church at Owens Cross Roads.

The services will be conducted at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Willis Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Neal's cemetery, with Laughlin-Service funeral home directing.

Mrs. Sims died Thursday night of a heart attack after being informed of the unexpected death of her son in Chicago. Mrs. Sims is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Tom Jones of Chattanooga, Mrs. Deimer Pinkerton and Mrs. Obery Burks of Owens Cross Roads, Mrs. Oliver Cothren of Huntsville. Mrs. Willy Vaughn of Fayetteville, Tenn.; two sons, George Byrd of Owens Cross Roads and Claude Byrd of Scottsboro; 48 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

In addition to the above relatives, Carl Byrd is survived by one son, Larry, and one daughter, Linda Rose. Active pallbearers for Mrs. Sims include David L. Pinkerton, Alfred Pinkerton, Earl and Bobby Cothern, J.D. McPherson and Edward Bohanan.

Active pallbearers for Mr. Byrd include George Mincher, Billy Jones, Ab Cothern, Walter Byrd, Daniel Byrd, and Winfred Byrd.

Honorary pallbearers include Will Drake, L.M. Taylor, Mitchell Drake, Dr. James Carpenter, A.H. Ellett and Bob Long.
