Stephen Willcox

His family moved to Harwinton in western Conn when he was 14.
No other information is known from established records as of September 1998.
The linkage of this Stephen Wilcox to the Wilcoxes of Gallia County, OH is based on the following:
1. As noted above, no other information from established records is known about this Stephen.
2. This Stephen's older brother Elias married Lydia Lord on May 09, 1751 in Harwinton, CT.
3. The Gallia County Wilcoxes' Farm Day Book states that their Stephen Wilcox I married an Elanor Lord. This could be a case of brothers marrying sisters.
4. That he and Elanor had one child, Stephen II, and that Stephen I died when Stephen II was two years old (in 1766). If this is Stephen, the son of David, he would have been 32. Elanor, then,
married a Thurston and had several children. Stephen II's birthstate is reported as Mass.
5. The two children of Stephen II whom we know of, (Alfred (1795) and Hiram (1797), were born in NY. (Supporting a westward migration where few records have survived.)
6. Stephen I1 (with sons Alfred and Hiram) appears in Gallia County, OH in 1818/19.

Tombstone in Willcox Farm Cemetery, Morgan Twp, Gallia Co., OH, broken but very legible:
"In Memory of Alfred Willcox Died March 11th 1847 Aged 51 yrs 8 Mo 29 Days".
Stephen Willcox, Jr. administered Alfred's estate
Ten surviving heirs are definitely identified in an 1848 court record of a suit by Stephen Willcox against the other nine heirs for the purpose of gaining a clear title to forty acres of land which
had been deeded to Stephen by Alfred, the deed having been found to be defective after Alfred's death. All children indicated by the census data are accounted for.
Alfred died before the 1850 Census was taken so it does not list him or his place of birth; however, it lists the place of birth of his younger brother, Hiram, as NY. It would thus appear that the
Wilcox family lived in NY for at least 10 years. (Source: L. Coyle)
Alfred's son Samuel indicates in the 1880 Census that Alfred was born in NY.

DATA
TEXT John Wilcox compiled the information on Taphena Niles.Information on Taphena Niles was compiled by John Wilcox of Delaware, OH.
Taphena is known to be a daughter of Gaius and Rebecca because the Willcox Farm Book gives her maiden name as Niles, and the court action where Alfred Willcox sued Gaius Niles names Alfred as Gaius'
son-in-law.
Taphena migrated to Gallia County, Huntington Twp. with her first husband (Alfred Willcox) circa 1820, and apparently, lived there the rest of her life. Taphena was evidently unable to read or write
at the time of Alfred's death in 1847, as she signed legal papers with her mark.
Her second marriage was to Andrew Ewing, the son of Indian John, not Andrew Ewing the son of Swago Bill, as shown by Andrew's age when they were living together at the time of the 1850 Census. This
second marriage must have been unsuccessful, as Taphena and her youngest daughter, Susannah, were living alone together in 1860 and 1870.
In 1853 Andrew and Taphena sell to Abner J. Holcomb one-hundred acres off the east end of the north half of Section 16. It appears that they must have bought Emanuel Long's land at his death in 1853.
Abner still has the one-hundred acres in 1874, as shown by the Atlas Land Map. The remaining two-hundred and twenty acres would include the Wilcox Cemetery and the log house that was later on the
Alfred Willcox Farm, if it was, then, standing.
Taphena died between the 1870 and 1880 Census. He place of burial is unknown. The Zarah Holcomb plot in Glenn Cemetery, Vinton may have a third grave, unmarked, as is Susannah's.

Perry Willcox's tombstone in Willcox Cemetery, Huntington Twp reads: "d. Nov 8, 1826, Age 8 mo."
